Will using Krylon "plastic paint" extend the life of my EarthTainers?
Hey all (and more specifically, Ray!),
I was wondering if Krylon's plastic paint, which says it bonds to plastic, would extend the life of my EarthTainers. I built 4 for this season (1 of which I'm giving to my grandma who can't tend a normal garden anymore) and was thinking of spraying the outsides and the cut-out lid. Is this a worthwhile idea? Thanks! Jason |

Jason,
A couple of thoughts..... First, spray painting anything makes it look "like it was spray painted". You get the point. The Centrex RuggedTotes have a lifetime guarantee so I would be less concerned with UV destruction, as was the case with the prior Rubbermaid containers used in the earlier EarthTainer design. So, I would recommend either of 2 options. First, spray a coating of Aerospace 303 on the surfaces of the EarthTainer which are exposed to the Sun: I love their tag line: "SPF 40 for your stuff". About $15.00 on Amazon with free shipping: http://www.amazon.com/303-Products-P...4171562&sr=8-1 Alternatively, wrap the outer walls of the EarthTainer in a 2 foot section of bamboo or rattan curtain to shade it from the Sun. Spray painting would be my last resort....... Raybo |

Raybo,
Have used used this stuff? My kayaker buddies swear by it for plastic, but I haven't used it. Jason, I took a hard look at the Krylon as well. Specifically their UV resistant clear. At present I haven't done anything and might not.... |

James,
I have applied it to all of the EarthTainers this year. I'm also using it on my car dashboard and tires. The Reviews claim it is much better than ArmorAll type products. So far, it seems to be living up to that claim. Raybo |

If you have some left over after spraying your pots: I have read that the Aerospace Protectant is great conditioner for hot tub lids. It keeps away the sun damage & makes them last years longer.

Hey Raybo - I think I see a house in need of some paint behind the foliage in that pic |

I didn't get any of the BFC seeds! This thread is going to be closed for sure.
We are going to hunt down some of the aerospace protectant and spray our hot tub cover - I'll let you know how it does! |

Ami,
Read some of the Reviews on the Amazon site in the link I posted. The opinion seems to be that Aerospace 303 is superior to ArmorAll. I like what I am seeing so far with it. Raybo |

Jason - I haven't used any of the protectorants but, do use a bamboo shade that wraps around 3 sides of the tainers. I haven't pulled them out yet as for now, bc I want the sun on the tainers to keep the mix warm. In another 2-4 weeks, I'll start using them. In my situation, the shades have proved to be indispensable in the Texas sun/heat. The by product is the plastic is fully shielded from the suns rays and seems to be holding up well. Not a pretty solution, but, it works well. Good luck.
