Default what are your favorite slicers? and why?

We have always planted romas and such for canning purposes, and then slicers. Until know we have really liked Early Girls, but this year have started Better Bush imp. How do you all feel about the Better Bush??

What other slicers do you all recommend? and why?

I am a big fan of a sliced tomato with dinner, with salt and pepper on it, as one of my side dishes (yeah I take acid reflux meds ). It's nothing for me to eat 2 a day So I am always looking for suggestions.

We normaly run 70-80 plants, so we have room next year for a few of many types.

also, if seeds are hard to find, let me know where you get them.

Thanks

Not to take away from your thread, but you may find some of the answers you're looking for if you Search for other threads about "favorite heirlooms" or "favorite varieties". There's lots of great information here!

Once you see a variety you like, you can search Tanias tomatobase to see where seeds can be purchased. Tania herself sells many, and lists the various sources for each variety. There is also a seed trading forum on the forum.

Of the tomatoes I grew last year, I loved my Amish Paste, Cherokee Purple, and German Johnson Pink tomatoes for slicing.

Some of the Amish paste were a bit small for that purpose, but the flavor was good enough that I didn't care! Really full bodied and great on a sandwich.

PS: I like the two OPs from Gleckler that I listed for production and flavor.
Baseball sized tomatoes, mostly. Of the hybrids, Goliath set bigger fruit,
but Early Goliath had sweeter flavor when I grew it. Jetsetter has more
middle of the road flavor, but it is a robust, productive plant, and early
enough for our climate. It produced more or less perfect oblate slicers,
in a fairly cruddy year for weather, too. (I have not grown Better Bush.)

Welcome to the Tomatoville forum! If you aren't familiar with the Wanted/Needed section on the forum, you may want to check that out for a great place to trade tomato seeds.

I love Aunt Ruby's German Green, Paul Robeson and Orlov Yellow. They grow well for me here in Portland, OR and produce big, tasty and beautiful tomatoes!

Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red - fabulous unassuming red slicer with a little point on the end
Sunray - another amazing slicer - orange, brilliant orange, full-flavored & hardy
Earl of Edgecombe - another fabulous orange slicer
Nyagous - a black cluster slicer that performs admirably for us 9sheltered from blazing hot afternoon sun here) & taste is wonderful

Rutgers is my favorite. It has been for a long time. They make great tomato sandwiches.

My favorite slicers vary each year.
Last year my favorite was Purple Dog Creek, a large tomato with very complex tastes unlike any other tomato. Last year was my first growing them but I already have some in the ground for this year.
Other favorites over the years have been:
Liz Birt
Barlow Jap
Brandywine-Glick's
Brandywine-Cowlicks
Tarasenko6
Sandul Moldovan
Amazon Chocolate
Kelloggs Breakfast
Earls Faux
Dora
Mrs Benson
Medium sized slicers would include:
Dana's Dusky Rose
Bear Creek
Blackmaster
Kukla's Portugese Bullsheart
and the list goes on. Having grown hundreds if not thousands of different varieties, these are what I consider to be some of the best. Yes there are many others, but these are some that I include in my gardens just about every year.
Enjoy
Camo

For taste I love the fat, dense pink beefsteaks like Brandywine (Sudduths, Cowlicks, etc.), Earl's Faux, Stump of the World, etc. I also love the purple beefsteaks like Cherokee Purple and Indian Stripe, and some sweet hearts like Kosovo, Russian 117, and Wes. All of these seeds are available from most seed houses, and through trades or requests here.

I'm also a fan of Sandul Moldovan, Kosovo, Amazon Chocolate, Mrs. Benson and German Johnson for their beautiful shapes and excellent flavor. Terhune was a new favorite last year.

Kukla's Portugese Bullsheart

******

M ( Camo) Jackie , the source to several of us for the three Portuguese varieties refered to the above just as a heart, not bullsheart.

So I and others I know have been using the following:

Kukla's Portuguese Heart ( RL)

Kukla's Portuguese Beefsteak ( PL)

Kukla's Portuguese Paste ( RL)

I offered all three in my Jan 2012 Seed Offer here but ran out of seeds quickly, so I do hope that those who requested and got what they requested will save seeds and hopefully send some back to me, since I'm not having any of the three grown this summer, and also share them with others.

I also SSE listed for 2012 all three as written above. And also sent seeds for trial to those commercial places where I always do.

It took some time to clean up what was sent to me b'c as Jackie noted herself, she was having some problems with crossed seeds.

All are red fruits except that the paste one occasionally throws a pink fruited plant and I noted that in my seed offer here and also in my SSE listing for this one that seeds should be saved from the red fruited plants, not the pink, although the pink fruits taste the same, look the same, etc.

Heaven forbid that someone doesn't name a variety Kukla's Portuguese Pink Paste b/c as it is, the original name indicates RED fruits.

I know, I know, I haven't indicated any favorite slicers in this thread, to date, but that doesn't mean I haven't been reading the thread.

And now back to watching tennis from Rome, Italy, and yes, most know I'm a tennis addict, but not as bad as a tomato addict.

I almost forgot to say that I was very very impressed with the taste and production of all three, especially the heart and the beefsteak ones.
