Default Holes

Hey guys, something is eating holes in the leaves of my plants. Can you tell me what it is and maybe the best pesticide to use? I can post pictures if need be.

Pictures are always helpful. Size of holes? Location on plants? Frass visible? Just tomato plants? Grasshoppers, slugs, snails, flea beetles, hornworms all come to mind as things that make holes in leaves up here. The remedy would depend on what it is... insecticidal soap, Bt, pyrethrins, or handpicking at night or early am might work once you figure out what's causing it.

From the picks that looks like insect damage only on the older leaves of your pepper plants. Sometimes when the plants/leaves are small they will get a bug bite that looks a lot bigger as the leaf grows. I have nothing here but instinct and my impression from your pics but that looks like older beetle damage.

If it is 1. only on older leaves and 2. Not readily evident who the culprit is, then I would watch a few days to see if it is continuing. Look really close for new smaller holes. Check the underside of leaves real well.

If it continued and I still couldn't tell what is doing it I would go with a spray of sevin.

Good luck.

Could it be slugs? Check outside after sundown. You will see them if it is the culprit. They seem to enjoy pepper leaves.

Better follow Mudmans advice and go out to look for slugs in the evening. I didn't even think of that as I never seem to have any problems with them. For some reason they all seem to end up in DWs hostas.

I've got holes on my plants that look identical. I am pretty sure slugs are causing the damage. I've been dusting with DE around the base of the plant and on some of the leaves. Sluggo is what most folks use to get rid of those slimy critters.

I got the same thing on my peppers. The only cure for slugs is really cold beer.

Tomorrow is going to be a bloody mary morning.

I would never serve perfectly good beer to a slug.
