squash surprise
i have had pitiful squash harvests for about 4 years and so i was skeptical as i planted this year. i had almost no female blossoms during this time period and the squash bugs were terrible, so you can understand the skepticism. i figured i would be covered up with the bugs due to the mild winter however, i have had almost no pests andi have picked more squash in 10 days than in the previous two years combined. whats up with that? jon

I planted my squash on May 18. Since then, we've had nearly perfect weather for squash and they've run rampant. I have about 30 hills of winter squash and, thus far, I've sighted (and eliminated) one cucumber beetle - that's it, one single bug. No spraying, no nothing, just good luck....so far. Last year it was a constant battle to keep the cuke beetles and squash bugs at bay.

I'm happy for all of you! The cuke beetles are here in PA! The squash bugs should be arriving any time. I don't have time to spray them so I'm picking off bad leaves and hoping for the best. The new leaves on the zukes are wilted and turning grayish today and I'm just pretending it's the intense heat.

We have had a bountiful crop of squash also and oddly the cucumbers have been pitiful producers this year. Usually they both do about the same but for some reason the squash have flourished while the cucumbers have struggled.
