Default Storm damage

The two tomato plants in the raised bed where the stakes snapped are my two Joe's pink oxheart so I was heartsick when I saw them go... but it looks like the stems are actually intact, even though all the green fruit was blow off of them. Don't know if this greenie is mature enough to ripen inside or not. Had the stakes up in the last garden but hadn't tied anything in that garden yet so I'm gonna bet there are a lot of tomatoes with snapped stems out there since they were very thick, all my dwarfs are in the garden and all the maters from R-Z....
Power is out, more people without power than when the remnants of Ike came through in 2008. Power was out for 10 days then. I really appreciate AC...

Sorry about your losses of the trees.
I hope there isn't alot of damage to the R-Z and dwarfs.
I hope you can get the power back on quickly.

Sorry, too, Lurley, that you were hit so hard but glad you're ok. Being without power is tough- makes one appreciate all the things we take for granted. kath

Wow, so sorry Lurley!

It looks like the tree missed your house? I hope I'm seeing that right.

I can see the damage to the shed roof and is that a trailer in the garden? Can't tell what that is in the yard in the truck picture.

Looks like you've been handed some extra work to do. I hope you have the resources and the strength to be able to get out there and put in all back together. Been through a couple of these kinds of things, so I feel your pain. Not as easy as it sounds and always takes more time than we think it will. But having read your posts, I have the feeling that you will tackle the challenges, recover and thrive again. Shame about the trees, though.

I would also be sick about the hearts. That green one is so pretty! I have found that the earlier you pick them, the less flavor they tend to have when they ripen. I think it also depends on the variety.

That said, I just stopped writing this response, went into the kitchen and ate a Yellow Trifele that I knocked off when it was green and ripened inside. (For you, of course, not because all of this talk reminded me that I had a yummy tomato sitting there waiting to be eaten.)

While it was not quite as flavorful as the ones I pick when yellow, it was pretty darn good! Not a lot of difference. So I say Go for it! Of course, fried green tomatoes are always mighty tasty, too. Just don't let that beauty go to waste!

(((Lurley))) So sorry to see those beautiful trees downed, you must be feeling a bit heartsick at the sight. That is a lot of extra work for you and yours to deal with in the next few weeks. Hopefully the power will be on sooner rather than later and help in dealing with the cleanup. I hope no one was injured and wish you all strength and energy. Our thoughts are with all affected by these horrible storms.

We have power again! I can't believe we got it back so quickly, we were prepared for a week or more. We ran through about 15 gallons of fuel for the generator and had about 30 gallons more on standby that we won't need thank goodness. Filed an insurance claim, but have no idea when we will actually see someone so we are starting the clean up ourselves. My neighbor will be over tomorrow with the chainsaw and as soon as he's done with his own downed trees my dad will be bringing me his chipper. The photo from the truck showed my mailbox in the drainage ditch, and that was a 6 ft folding banquet table resting on top of the onions and tomatoes with the trailer in the garden. At least we secured the trampoline well enough... there is a house with a trampoline in the side of it in another neighborhood around here.

So sorry this happened to you but I am glad no one was hurt!

I read about the storm that hit many states and I immediately thought of the tomatoville community. I hope all of you are well and that your gardens didn't suffer too much!

That's a lot of force to snap a tree like that! Such a shame about your tomatoes... but if the stems are intact, there's still time for them to recover and set new fruit. I hope they do, and you have a great crop.

We got the storm too

Luckily my two new plum trees and pear tree are okay, but we had a ton of branches come down from the big pine and maple trees. My peppers took a beating but I think at least 60% of those will survive, the tomato plants didn't do so well. The bamboo poles I used to stake them were no match for wind of that speed. I think I lost all or at least most of the Dwarf Project plants. Between the high humidity early in the season, the heat wave, and super wind storm yesterday, my couple hundred tomato plants has been slashed to about 5 or 6 plants. I'm still trying to clean up, will know more in the next day or two.

Lurley - Thank God you and your family are OK. Trees and tomatoes can be grown again. I am sorry for all the work and loss but thankful that you have power back and you are alive to tell about it!

Lurley, make sure you take enough pictures before you start to clean up. Just sayin'.

Lurley, I've been having problems getting back on to Tville and only got on late today and still am having problems that may relate to my browser, so this is the first time I'm actually posting at Tville.

I'm so glad no one was hurt but my heavens what a mess.

And yes, I saw the reference to Joe's Pink Oxheart but not to worry b'c there were just four of you who signed up for that variety b'c I had so few seeds and I think one or two of the others got up some plants but would have to check on that. I think I might even have a few seeds left here at home.

But what's more important is that you and family are OK, power is back on, etc.
