2013 Season Snapshot
Quick write up to supplement my grafting post.
Grafting went well enough that I gave away more grafted plants than I kept. We all know what a challenge the weather was this past year. Way too much rain in May and June led to quite a bit of extra stress on the plants, starting with delayed plant out and led to vastly increased disease pressure. Constant spraying and a bout of herbicide damage led me to believe by mid-June that I might not get anything at all. Muddled through, the plants grew out of it and it ended up being a very good season. Peas- Green Arrow and Alderman Carrots – Cosmic Purple, Minicor and Little Thumb Cucumber - Poona Kheera Tomatoes - Grew grafted and ungrafted versions of: Cherokee Purple, Stump of the World, Vorlon, Japanese Trifele Black, Goose Creek Ungrafted: Black Cherry, Riesentraube, Orange Banana, Polish Linguisa Results Poona Kheera – Solid cuke. Great production. Loved it. Cherokee Purple – Love it, personal favorite Stump of the World – Love it Goose Creek – Love it Vorlon – Excellent, not quite a CP but great production brings it close Black Cherry – Love it, Great production Riesentraube – Love it, Great production Orange Banana – Great production, love them in salads. Good sauce addition. Polish Linguisa – I like it, great sauce tomato, very good production this year. Japanese Trifele Black – Had high hopes for this one. I did not like this tomato. Incredible production, subpar taste. Bulked out some sauce with it. Will not be invited back to the party. May Gallery - http://bit.ly/1hmcfho Planted out May 18th, in a rainstorm. I was aiming for May 1. Oops lost one. Broke at the graft line. Can we get planted please? Did not get the cages on, and a windstorm on the 19th caused me to lose the tops of several plants and completely trashed some of my cukes. Immediately started more seed. Cukes are fast so no biggie. Cukes before Cukes After With replacements ready Damaged plants June Gallery - http://bit.ly/1cETsy2 10 inches of rain this month and herbicide damage. Affected peas Affected toms July Gallery - http://bit.ly/1h2jbSL Still constantly spraying, season finally coming together. Alternate view Stump Riesentraube Poona Kheera The only bonus was multiple H2O2 spraying experiments. Don’t get it on you! Bacterial wilt eventually took down the cukes, but we still got plenty. An errant seed in the Poona Kheera pack. Not sure what this was. It was good though. |

Rest of Season
August
Gallery - http://bit.ly/Npc9MK Harvest really starting to roll Cherokee Purple Cherokee P and Stump were simply sublime this year. My good friend Nigel Tufnel stopped by for a Cherokee vs. Stump tasting. His only comment- “These go to eleven.” Cherries Had a mix-up here. Ended up growing out 2 Maxifort Plants by mistake. Tasted it - Insipid yellow cherry. Tallest plants by a long shot. Let them go till mid-August and finally chopped it down. It grew back and flowered at the end of September. Other than rain it received no water or fertilizer since mid August. I would say it has some vigor to it. September Gallery - http://bit.ly/1peHIrm Still cruising October Gallery - http://bit.ly/1mByXIZ Starting to wrap up. Found some slug eggs under a Tainer Multiple layers of landscaping cloth are no match for Maxifort! Now it is time to finish clearing the decks, and prepare for 2014. |
