Default Savananas, are these pictures of orange tomatoes?

Hi, I’m just wondering at the colour of these tomatoes (first picture, the smaller ones) and why the skin and flesh colour are different? I grew them last summer, one of Tom Wagner’s segregating lines. As you can see from the pictures these ones were a reddy-orange outside but orangy-yellow inside.

The genes that control skin color are different from the ones that control interior color. I'm not sure what is going on there as the flesh just under the skin appears to be red. It looks like it may be a bicolor of some kind.

Thanks Doug, I had wondered at bi colour but as there wasn't any darker colour inside I discounted it, so good for you to say and make me think again. I believe Ananas Noir and Pinapple are in the breeding.

This is distinct from the typical bi-color trait as seen in "Ananas Noir" and "Pineapple".

I've been referring to tomatoes like this as having an opaque-red skin. (Frogsleep Farms also has some lines that look like this.) Most tomatoes have transparent or transparent-yellow skin, by comparison.

What was the name of the segregating line? I'm interested in picking up some seeds for a tomato like this.

Is it known what gives them this opaque-red skin?

I adore looking at Frogsleap's tomatoes, so beautiful. Those dark crimson tomatoes are stunning and the red with green inside.

Tom named these ones Savananas, and I had my seed through Tom Wagner seeds. I saved seeds from several of the plants I grew last year but it's not clear from what I've written on the packets which one this is. If you don't mind waiting, I'm growing several of these lines and should I be lucky enough for any with 'opaque-red skin' show up again, I can save some seed for you.

I expect it will come down to one gene, but it has not been named or characterized to my knowledge. I've noticed opaque-red skin before (in the micro-tomato "Tiny Tim"), but not in association with yellow fruit flesh.

My other plans to examine the trait involved crossing TT to some yellows and then screening the F2s, hoping the red skin and flesh aren't tightly linked. Waiting only one season would be awesome.
