The crocus are blooming first day. Snow just disappeared on the 12 of April. Spring at last.

Very nice. Once we move to our new state, I'd like to establish more bulbs then I have in AZ. They just take awhile and I've been in "moving" gear for a couple of years. What I really want is to try some saffron crocus, although I thought they bloomed in fall for some reason. But, yours look like saffron. Are they?

The crosus shown are not saffron producing types. I had a 100 saffron crocus for a couple of years. They did not produce well and are now pulled up. I did get a few pieces of saffron but not worth the effort. Not all survived the Winters, even when heavily mulched.

http://www.durgan.org/URL/?IHRDW 29 September 2011 Mulch.
Mulch, partially composed wood chips, are available from the City free of charge. It is only necessary to pick them up. There is a half cubic yard box placed in the back of he Van to accomplish this task. Today a load was transported and the mulch placed on the Saffron Crocus bed for overwintering to ameliorate the effects of the freezing and thawing cycles.

http://www.durgan.org/URL/?EQMIG 29 September 2011 Saffron crocus (Crocus sativus)
http://www.durgan.org/URL/?NKYQD 29 November 2011 Most of the Saffron bulbs have started to grow.
One hundred bulbs of the Saffron crocus(Crocus sativus)were planted at six inch centres, and about 6 inches deep.. These are recommended hardy above Zone 6. I am on the border(Zone 5B) so decided to take a chance on them thriving, since deep ground frost is often not severe in my local area. The bed was rototilled and compost added. Mulch will be added later. The bulbs were planted inside the rabbit fence, since crocus grow early in the Spring, and one rabbit can destroy all in one night. The objective is to harvest some saffron in the Fall of 2012.

Even though you are in the same zone and latitude your season seems to be about two weeks behind mine. My crocuses have been in bloom for a week and a half. The drops are heading for 3 weeks.
