Curling tomato leaf update.
I thought I would put up an update on the tomatoes that had curling leaves. Of the plants that had it I only had to planted a few.
Here is pictures of the plants when I first noticed it. Today I noticed two plants that still have the curling leaves in the garden. I will take a closer look tomorrow too. One of them seems to have started to put on new growth. The other was stunted by all of the rain last month. Here is the one that seems to have put on a little growth. And a picture of the stunted one. The old photos and the new are not of the same plant. I still have plants that are not planted and of those the curling is still there on some. I don't think it has gone away on any. The most affected is very spindly and is really struggling. I'm sure it is spindly due to being shaded by the other plants. Any thoughts on this? -Zach

Looks all too familiar. What mixes did you use for seed starting and potting up?

Yeah, probably, that odd thinning and everything would indicate herbicide. Also the plants look a bit starved. Maybe due to rain they can't absorb well or lack of air.

You might check your soil for a root pest like root aphids or nasty nematodes.

Herbicide can come from manure, or straw laid as mulch. Sometimes compost will have an imbalanced nutrient makeup, too much of one minor element, and it will cause the plant to look like it was damaged with herbicide.
If you pull any plants, look at the roots. If they have rotten away to nothing, that could have been part of the problem as well. |

I'm thinking it might be from the jiffy starting mix I used. I talk to a few other people today and they said they have had problems with it this year too. Gnats really bad like I did as well.

Also, did these symptoms start while they were in the seed mix, or after transplanted a while? |

I have this happen from time to time, and in most cases the plants eventually come out of it.
I have never used Jiffy either. IMHO my problem is probably cultural, too much water, too cold etc. Here seems to be an extreme case. Seems variety specific for me with others showing no symptoms. |

It's happened to me the last two years also. From neighbors landscapers spraying. Last year I had to top the plants affected in order to get them growing again. They came back, but production was poor to say the least.
Hope it works out better for you.

It was jiffy organic and it started when in the mix as seedlings. -Zach

I don't think it is variety specific. I started several plant of each and one will be normal the other will be affected. -Zach
