the axis of evil (weeds)
Cast your vote!
Summertime for me means lots and lots of weed destruction. If you had to choose just one weed that was the baddest in your garden, what would it be? Of course it changes through the season but for me the public enemy #1 is morning glory, or bindweed. |

My arc nemesis is Little Mallow aka Cheese Weed. The stuff grows on rock practically and attracts the dreaded thrips that bring Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus with them. I hate this weed with a passion.

Nothing short of a D9 Cat and scraping off the top five feet of soil in you yard and your neighbors on both sides will get rid of it.
My neighbor brought in some cheap soil loaded with it and grass burrs and I have been dealing with it ever since. Also I ((highly)) recommend not buying cheap hay this is another way to transfer horrific weeds onto your property. I was about to buy some one time and noticed it was loaded with grass burrs. I have some kind of bunch grass. I also have centipede grass and some wirey grass, maybe love grass? Nuts edge, too but not too bad inside the garden, terrible just outside the garden. Maybe one of the grasses is nuts edge and I haven't let it get big enough to go to seed.
I am gardening in a reclaimed pasture which was not mowed or maintained in anyway for nearly 20 years. Last year was my first year here and the weeds were chin high, including blackberry bushes. I let the goats graze it for several months. Mowed, then shallow tilled many, many times to turn all the weeds under. Will try to build up enough mulch by next spring to not need tilling anymore, although it's a very shallow till, just a few inches. |

Tree weeds
So what about the other type of weed? Trees!
I have to nominate two types for myself; Siberian elm, a large tree that can happily grow in any soil anywhere with no water and broadcast out 500 lbs of seeds into the entire neighborhood every year. Branches regularly rot and fall. Trash all the way. The second is box elder, a native type of maple here in Utah. Seeds everywhere and if you try to trim it, it will explode with new growth that looks like a science experiment gone bad. This tree also has the precious role of being host to the box elder bug. A lovely little crawlie that socializes in big gross clumps. |

It reason the elms shed limbs is because of the stem girdling beetle for the most part here and the seeds are horrible.
Not all trees are good trees for sure. worth |
