What hypothetical tomato crosses interest you?
I like to dream of tomato crosses (as well as watermelon crosses, and so forth). So, I thought we could start a thread about it where people could share ideas that interest them and talk about them. I'm not just interested in crosses between OP varieties.
Here are some that interest me: Any of these for the matriarchal line: Alaskan Gold, Alpine, Amethyst Jewel, Anna Banana Russian, Anna Russian, Atkinson, Aunt Gertie's Gold, Aussie, Big Zac F1, Bill Bean, Black, Black Bear, Black Beauty, Black Giant, Black Mountain Pink, Black from Tula, Blue Beauty, Caro Rich, Chapman, Cherokee Chocolate, Chocolate Stripes, Church, Clear Pink Early, Cosmonaut Volkov, Cougar Red, Creole, Cuor Di Bue, Cuostralee, Dark Galaxy, EM Champion, Early Cascade, Early Glee, Early Rouge, Early Wonder, Evergreen, Forest Fire, George Detsikas Italian Red, Girl Girl's Weird Thing, Golden Queen, Good Old Fashioned Red, Green Giant, Gregori's Altai, Grosse Lisse, Grub's Mystery Green, Heatwave II F1, Indian Stripe, Japanese Black Trifele, Jetsetter F1, Kosovo, Legend, Li Cun, Malakhitovaya Shkatulka, Malinovoe Chudo, Manitoba, Marmande, Megabite, Mexican Yellow, Missouri Pink Love Apple, Moskvich, Napa Giant, New Yorker, North Dakota Earliana, Omar's Lebanese, Opalka, Oroma, Persimmon, Pink Berkeley Tie Dye, Pink Cheeks, Pink Stuffer, Pruden's Purple, Red Beauty, Red Rocket, Reisetomate, Roma, Rosabec, Sasha's Altai, Siletz, Sweet Ozark Orange, Talbot Russian, Taxi, Thessaloniki, Tiffen Mennonite, White Queen, Yellow Brandywine (Abundant Life), Yellow Stuffer, Yellow Trifele Any of these for the patriarchal line: Ambrosia Red, Black Dragon, Bosque Blue, Chocolate Pear, Coyote, Early Girl F1, Farthest North, Gardener's Delight, Graham's Good Keeper, Ildi, Jackie, Matina, Medovaya Kaplya, Menehune, Napa Chardonnay Blush, Orange and Green Zebra, Ovita, Pakenham Pear, Ron's Carbon Copy, Snow Fairy, Sub Arctic Plenty, Super Snow White, Sweet Orange Cherry, Sweetie (cherry) Also, using Pakenham Pear, Matina and Graham's Good Keeper on the matriarchal line with those of the second list that aren't the same variety as the patriarchal line also interests me. Also, these interest me (note that Green Pear and Cherokee Green Pear are different varieties with similar names): • Ambrosia Red x Sophie's Choice • Aussie x Moravsky Div • Aussie x Napa Giant • Aussie x Thessaloniki • Austin's Red Pear x Early Girl F1 • Austin's Red Pear x McGee • Black from Tula x Maglia Rosa • Blue Berries x Sweet Orange Cherry • Brandywine x Early Girl F1 • Chapman x Blue Berries • Chapman x Green Pear • Chapman x Maglia Rosa • Chapman x Moravsky Div • Chapman x Pink Cheeks • Cherokee Green Pear x Matina • Creole x Blue Berries • Creole x Green Pear • Creole x Thessaloniki • Cuostralee x McGee • Cuostralee x Moravsky Div • Early Girl F1 x Blue Berries • Early Girl F1 x McGee • Graham's Good Keeper x Blue Berries • Graham's Good Keeper x Maglia Rosa • Graham's Good Keeper x Porter • Green Pear x McGee • Indian Stripe x Blue Berries • Lemon Boy F1 x Caspian Pink • Maglia Rosa x Blue Berries • Malinovoe Chudo x Gold Nugget • Matina x Blue Berries • Matina x Green Pear • Matina x McGee • Matina x Super Sioux • McGee x Napa Chardonnay Blush • McGee x Ron's Carbon Copy • Medovaya Kaplya x Reisetomate • Mexican Yellow x Black Giant • Missouri Pink Love Apple x McGee • Mountain Princess x Blue Berries • Napa Giant x Blue Berries • Napa Giant x Maglia Rosa • Nineveh x Matina • Oroma x Blue Berries • Oroma x Valencia • Pakenham Pear x McGee • Pakenham Pear x Menehune • Pakenham Pear x Moravsky Div • Pink Cheeks x Black Giant • Pink Cheeks x Chapman • Pink Cheeks x McGee • Pink Cheeks x Mexican Yellow • Pink Cheeks x Seek No Further Love Apple • Pruden's Purple x Green Pear • Red Rocket x Blue Berries • Reisetomate x Blue Berries • Reisetomate x Dark Galaxy • Roma x McGee • Ron's Carbon Copy x Blue Berries • Sophie's Choice x Sweet Orange Cherry • Stupice x Red Rocket • Sungold F1 x Sunsugar F1 • Sungold F1 x Sweet Orange Cherry • Sunsugar F1 x Sungold F1 • Super Sioux x Ron's Carbon Copy • Super Sioux x Sweet Orange Cherry • Sweet Orange Cherry x Reisetomate • Sweet Orange Cherry x Sophie's Choice • Sweet Ozark Orange x Giant Belgium • Sweet Ozark Orange x McGee • Sweet Ozark Orange x Seek No Further Love Apple • Sweet Ozark Orange x Sophie's Choice • Thessaloniki x Aussie • Thessaloniki x Beam's Yellow Pear • Thessaloniki x Blue Berries • Thessaloniki x Creole • Thessaloniki x Green Pear • Thessaloniki x McGee • Thessaloniki x Moravsky Div • Thessaloniki x Wapsipinicon Peach • Wapsipinicon Peach x Blue Berries • Yellow Stuffer x Reisetomate • Yellow Stuffer x Wapsipinicon Peach Anyway, this list doesn't only include varieties that have done well for me so far, but I am curious about the results of the crosses. Shule, there's a lot to think about there.
The one I would like to see most is Porter x Sungold Porter is a pink cherry that grows and tastes better when grown in drought years, and features no splitting, drought hardiness, copious production, Pink-excellent taste, the only tomato that I have grown from spring through first frost, a canning tomato that tastes even better when eaten fresh - Especially with a little salt = my nickname here came from eating Porter tomatoes with a little salt. Sungold is smaller and a splitter, but has a "Different good taste", is also a copious producer, and early. I do like the three phases of Sungold ripeness and the different tastes. I could see the heirloom Porter being crossed with an F1 Sungold. I would try doing it myself, but I have no idea how. |

Anyway, Porter x Sungold F1 sounds pretty awesome. You might get a natural cross one of these days if you grow them together. You can try growing one seed from each tomato, instead of several seeds from one tomato. You might be more likely to find a cross with one of them that way (although technically only one unit of pollen corresponds to only one seed; however, a bee is likely to deposit more than one unit of the same kind of pollen in the same flower—at least, that seems to be my experience with melons; tamatoes have perfect flowers, though—so they're more likely than melons to have some non-crossed seeds, too). When Porter is overwatered it loses its taste. It becomes a plain boring tomato that I really don't care for. The plants also become bushy with way too much leaf growth.

don't often see Graham's Good Keeper mentioned - what would you be looking for in these two crosses: • Graham's Good Keeper x Maglia Rosa • Graham's Good Keeper x Ron's Carbon Copy

Maglia Rosa gets really soft and out of shape when over-ripe; so, I thought the cross might be able to make for a similar, larger tomato with better texture when overripe, without turning it into a late tomato. Using Green Tiger or Pink Tiger instead of Maglia Rosa is also an idea. I have no idea how productive and tasty Graham's Good Keeper is, but I figured a cross between it and Ron's Carbon Copy would likely make for a firm tomato with sweeter and tastier, and more productive qualities, and be somewhat larger than Ron's Carbon Copy. Ron's Carbon Copy seems to be capable of being rather vigorous and productive. Ron's Carbon Copy is a little soft when ripe, but I still like it that way, too. I have a feeling the firmness might not come forth until the F2 generation. Is softness dominant? Last edited by shule1; February 23, 2017 at 05:56 PM. |

That's pretty cool. I wonder how big fruits on a multiflora can get. I think the largest I've heard about were with Lime Green Salad, which I hear is a multiflora. I wonder if we crossed Legend or Siletz (which are parthenocarpic) with a multiflora what would happen. @Tormato That sounds vigorous, and sweet! Oarthenocarpic sounds like an interesting feature/
But the question is : Will the trait be passed on to the cross !! ?

It's also possible that the cross will be parthenocarpic, but not to the same degree as the parent. |

Does SunSugar F1 have the same sort of vigorous plant habit as SunGold F1 is said to? From what I've read, the fruit sounds just as good, but it seems to depend a lot on where you grow it, as to who favors one over the other. I think AKmark does a lot of crosses with BB, with larger fruits, anyhow. If you've tasted Zluta Kytice, what do you think? |
