New Varieties for 2008?
I was wondering which new varieties of veggies people were considering for next year. I have a lot of old favorites I grow over and over again but it's always fun to toss a few new ones into the mix for variety. Here's what I have planned or am thinking of growing that I have not grown before:
Pea-Russian Sugar Lettuce-Deer Tongue Endive-Frisee (tasted before) Potato-Belle de Fontenay Tomato-Green Gaint, Galina's (though I have tasted these before) Pepper-Mini Yellow, Hot Portugal Eggplant-Prosperosa Okra-White Velvet, Green Velvet Snap Bean-Super Marconi, Marvel of Venice, Fin de Bagnol, Rocquencourt Lima-King of the Garden Field Pea-White Acre Cucumber-Suyo Long (tasted before) Melon-Early Hanover Squash-Round of Parma Sweet Potato-Spanish Red (if Sand Hill offers it this year) Kale-Black Tuscan And that's it so far. Not a lot of new tomatoes this year. I'm sticking mostly to the familiar in that department. So let's hear what new things you all have planned for 2008! Happy Planning!

Maybe not brand new, but new to me, I want to try Small Wonder F1 Spaghetti squash. Its a single serving 1-2# size, and the normal ones I grow are from 5-9#. I love spaghetti squash, and grow about a bushel and a half each year, about 50# worth.

New to me this year will be:
Collards - Georgia Southern Broccoli - Green Sprouting Calabrese Lettuce - Goldrush Beans (dry) - Macedonian White, Mrociumere Beans (snap) - Muffet, Rocquencourt Lima - Christmas Lima (not sure our season is long enough for these) Pea - Greenfeast I tried Fin de Bagnols last year. It's quite productive but they need picking early as I found they developed a tough string if left too long on the plant. By the way, the name comes from the region of Bagnols not far from Paris which was, and still is I think, one of the market garden areas that supplies fruit and veg to Paris.

Yep, I think the Fin de Bagnol will have to be picked at least every two days to avoid the strings.
I think you'll like the Georgia Southern collards. They're very easy to grow. I like spaghetti squash but never thought I had enough room to grow it. Are they all vining varieties?

From out of nowhere this year: Those green radishes that resemble watermelons.
Whatever became of the 'Rocky' cucumber, that (I think) only Pinetree offered last year for just a few days before selling out? I recall they were pinky-finger sized, and you didn't have to peel them. Is it still around?

Michele, I don't know of any spaghetti squash that doesn't have long vines. I plant mine next to the corn so the vines can run underneath.

Soilsniffer, I see Territorial has "Rocky" for 2008.

That's it -- wasn't Pinetree, it was Territorial. They've been able to keep that cucumber to themselves for two years now.

Several of my new ones are from Seeds of Italy, too. Lots of fun stuff at that site.

I am also trying a bunch of 'new-to-me' veggies this summer, but it's a pain trying to find them all or find enough of them at one seed company to make the shipping worthwhile. More items than what's listed but only two
catalogs arrived so far and waiting to add to list. Beans-Dragon Tongue, heard so much about this one, time to try it out. Carrot-Oxheart, 1lb carrot should be nice (anyone have seeds??) Beets-Burpee golden Onion-Alisa Craig Exhibition, size matters in my garden! Popcorn-Tom Thumb and White Rice (if I can find them) Calico popcorn, Strawberry and Mexican black. Peppers-Marconi F1, 12"x3" on a 4 foot plant WOW! Plus a bunch of Aji hot pepper varieties for seed trading. Soilsniffer, I just noticed Johnny's has that "Rocky" cucumber too.
I like the Oxheart carrot. It never got nearly that big for me though. Just the size of a regular carrot with a wider top. Very sweet flavor.
