Another Aphid question

So I checked my infected Black Krim tonight and there were still some aphids on the plant so I picked one off and it was still alive.

My question is since they are on the under sides of the leaves it is hard to get the spray on those will the spray on the top still kill them or does the spray have to hit the aphids? It is of course hard to use a spray bottle upside down to get the underside of the leaves.

One additional question is will they eventually spread to the other tomatoes?

You'll have to hit the underside of the leaves where the aphids are. That's hard to do, and I use a pump-up garden sprayer with a mix of water and Sevin concentrate. Set the spray on almost a hard stream and really blast it in there.

I will have to bust out the sprayer next time I treat them, should I wait or do it now since I just sprayed yesterday?

If you don't think you got them yesterday, I'd spray again right away.

Make sure there's never been herbicide in your sprayer. I have two sprayers, one marked "Bugs and Fertilizer" and one marked "Weed Killer".

You SURE don't want to get that mixed up.

I have only used it once with deck wash so I may need to get another one

Deck wash doesn't sound too bad - the active ingredients are probably bleach, and maybe mild muriatic acid.

You might rinse it out several times with water, then spray some tender plant you don't care about - a petunia or something. There shouldn't be any damage to the plant, but you'd know for sure if the sprayer's safe within a day or two.

If a sprayer's ever held herbicide, though, I'd never use it for anything else.

I got to thinking that as well that the deck wash is probably not an issue with some additional rinse, I did rinse it quite well when I used it last spring.

I moved the Black Krim container to the end of the driveway to try and prevent any spread until I can asses the situation tonight. I did try and remove as many aphids as I could but did notice what looks like egg cases so I am not sure if those will hatch more.

Here I thought this tomato growing was a piece of cake only ever had a couple of catepillers on a couple of plants.

I thought about just removing it from the container and buying another heirloom as the nursery still had allot of very nice looking heirlooms last weekend, no black krim but a black from tula.

Well I got some incecticidle soap and a new 1 gallon sprayer and sprayed the black krim real good and have it about 30 feet from all my other containers so I will monitor it over the next few days and spray again in 2 to 3 days and hopefully I can beat the aphids.

I did not see a ton tonight but lots of what looked liked eggs so I am keeping my fingers crossed I can beat these suckers.

Once you have balanced the Aphis will be kept at bay.
