Spudakee Purple/Cherokee Purple PL

Got my seed from Bill Malin (Spudleafwillie) after having the fiasco last year with the "NOT Cherokee Purple" I got from Baker Creek. I decided to give Spuds PL version a try and man its starting to turn out the tomatoes. Few pictures from my plant. Ami

Looking very nice my Spudakee is loaded with toms too, not as large as I expected but I am noticing size on all toms is not quite what it was last year. All appear to be in the 8-12 ounce range. Good growing!!

Are your plants totally caged in? How are you keeping birds, squirrels, etc. away from these almost fully ripe fruit?

Dewayne, they are grown in containers which I have affixed a cage to. Don't have bird/animal problems as my property boarders on a fruit orchard and next to that is a grain field so they have other things to eat. Weather is my biggest problem. Ami

Growing this one for the first time this fall. I had CP PL also but it bit the dust back in august. What I can say so far is that this cultivar exhibits the same amazing disease tolerance as cherokee purple. What I am talking about is heavily foliar diseased plants springing back to life and completley out growing an ailment. Also it has the most fruit set so far this fall around 20 and it is in 1/2 day or less sunshine. I have it in a 15 gallon pot and the plant is getting monsterous, much bigger than cherokee purple plants I have grown. An added bonus is that it seems to cross easy, have had a lot of blossums take to crosses i have done thus far. It will be a while before I get any ripe fruit but if the taste is as good as many descibe it will definately be a winner.

All of the posts in this thread to date have been in reference to Bill's Spudakee CP which is PL.

But another PL CP has been available for quite a while and that's the PL CP discovered by Jere Gettle and listed in the SSE Yearbooks quite a few years ago.

I have seen some comparisons between the Gettle PL one and CP and opinion is mixed as to identity between the two for all else except leaf form.

Have any of you considered comparing Spudakee and Gettle's PL CP with CP?

I was trying to compare the three this fall CP, CP PL, and Spudakee. unfortunately, As I said in the last post the CP PL bit the dust in August. I do have a normal CP but it is way behind spudakee and yets even less light right now so this comparison will not be fair either. Maybe inthe spring I can get all three going under nearly identical conditions.
