Emerald Ash Borer in the Upper Pen!
the EAB had been seen across the Straights for a while and up in the Soo, but these were in the far west, in the Keweenaw Peninsula.
these things move pretty fast, so be aware, WI, MN and Nw ONT. in my area, between Pt. Huron and Detroit it is nothing to count hundreds of dead ash trees in a few miles of country road. 30 - 40% IMO. hauling firewood seems to be the quickest way they are spread, so tell your friends with property not to bring home free firewood....it might not be so free after all. yeah, not good news. the local paper has reported on the critter a few weeks ago. there are a lot of ash trees growing here. you can find them in the wild. hardy, but defenseless against a little bug. i hope they find a solution soon. i remember the dutch elm beetle killing the elms in the detroit area. used to be a tree in front of everyones house. a squirrel could go from one end of the block to the other without touching the ground.

i know of 2 elms here in st clair county that are huge for today. almost 100' and 3'+ in dia. one is next door to my grandmothers old house. we had 1 left on the street in st clair shores in about 1965....must have been 6 or 7 feet in dia. at the ground. it heaved the sidewalk a whole lot and i used to ride my trike around it! it was still there in 1968 but long gone now.
there are thousands around here but they get to be about 18" in dia and get Dutch Elm Disease. someday i will have some room to plant some valley forge elms and maybe get their dna into the gene pool. good luck dave |
