Orange russian 117 and Stump
 

Even though I pulled the plant today due to Fusarium Wilt, Stump gave me some huge fruit before it went down. I ate one for dinner and will let these ripen on The counter.

I too like it very much. But Jazz blew me away, and then last night ate my first Elgin Pink which was as good or better than Jazz. It's a good problem trying to pick a favorite. Orange Russian wins if you put looks into the competition though! A thing of beauty sliced on a plate! And now I notice my GGWT are blushing , as are Rebel Yell and Sudduths!

Gorgeous! I'm growing Russian 117 mostly because Worth raved so much about Orange Russian 117 and I wanted to try the red one first. Haven't picked one yet but they are large and very prolific and not that wispy for a heart. So keeping my fingers crossed. I'm waiting for Rebel Yell and all my tomatoes to start blushing. Every day I can keep them on the vine without losing them to critters is a good day.

I loved OR117 and just realized the past couple of days that the one i planted is another variety entirely. It is a yellow tomato, not a heart. I can only think maybe Azoychoka, although I am not positive. Love Stump and it has become a must grow in my garden. But I was really looking forward to OR117.

Make sure you slice them lengthwise not like the regular way.:yes:
They are almost a seedless tomato too.

Russian 117 is a double heart and Georgia Streak is a well known typical gold/red bicolor.

Please consider growing the one parent Russian 117 sometime, IMO it's outstanding,
page 212 in my heirloom tomato book for those who might have a copy of that.

Orange Russian 117 has a streaky (pun intended) track record. As I have said before, when it is good it is great. Then it has off years where it is pretty bad; no production and no flavor. Lucky for me, this is an on year in my garden and OR117 is great this year.

PaulF I didn't know they had a rep for that.

OR117 was great for me last year as a late planting. This year I gave it the premier spot in a big cage with FULL sun...I pulled it out about 2 weeks back with just 6 green tomatoes on it and sparse foliage. I was expecting 30 tomatoes by that point, but truss after truss were empty and blackened. That plant was going nowhere. Real jekyll and hyde showing.

I do have 3 more in cages in the back yard in a more crowded, standard spot and those plants should start blushing any day. I hope those examples are good like last year.

That reputation may only apply to my garden. It may be the year or it may be me; that has been my experience. I enjoy the good years so much I keep planting it.

If you don't know about Glenn,you should since his website is outstanding.He has a full time job as a high school teacher and how he manages to take care of all his heirloom birdies, I don't know.

This is not a shopping cart site or one with pictures,just dedication to preserving as many varieties as he can.

I happen to have the catalog where I checked about Rusian #117 but didn't check the catalog to be sure it's there as well and I get sent the catalogs every year since I send Glenn the best of my new tomato varieties,that's why.

If you look in the Seed and Plant forum here at Tville you'll also see how many love his offerings.

And while at the website you might want to look at some of the other 400 plus tomato varieties he offers, and no seeds sent are older than 2 years old,which is remarkable IMO. But he does hire some of his high school students to help out in the summer.

Lastly,please note when you can request seeds and how to do it, since it's only at certain times that you can do that.
