Bucks County Hybrid
1 Attachment(s)
This is my first year that I am really trying with this variety-My Red Brandywine didn't germinate well, so I went with this one. Starting to get tomatoes and they are very uniform, not much cracking, etc. Next year, I will grow them side by side with RB. Anyone done that?

Beautiful!
I haven't grown side by side, but have tried them both. Bucks County did better. CECIL |
Bucks definitely is a good variety-I will continue to grow. What else you growing Cecil?

**** For sure. Let me backtrack a bit. Burpee first introduced the variety as Red Brandywine Hybrid and I bought both plants and seeds for same. That summer I grew out the RBHybrid from seed and the plants of same I'd purchased and my own Red Brandywine OP which I'd had for quite a few years. I saw absolutely no difference at all. Fast Forward a few years and Burpee changed the name to Buck's County Red but didn't indicate that it was the same as Red Brandywine Hybrid. After a couple of years they started adding that fact to the blurb, and I guess that info is still there. I had initially saved the seeds from RBHybrid, aka Buck's County Red, and was going to grow out some F2's to see if I saw any genetic segregation since I had seen no difference between the hybrid and OP versions. To this day I don't know what I did with those seeds and so I don't know what one would get from saved F2 seeds of Buck's County Red, aka Red Brandywine Hybrid. |
Carolyn-Assume you have been watching the Championships-Saw Serena lose today, missed Venus' match and saw Nadal win. Some good matches.
Anyway, I am going to save seed from my bucks and grow out to see what happens. Hope you are doing well. |
mdvpc, keep me in mind when you save those seeds. Ami
|
Ami-will do. We finished the tomatoes in the photo off last night and they were very good.

Hope you are doing well.[/quote] I'm watching every darn match that ESPN2 and NBC televise. This AM was terrific, especially Nadal coming back from two sets down to win. And Baghdatis is always a fave. Now awaiting yet another rain delay and then at noon NBC does the Roddick match. Feder is on now against Ferrero. How am I doing? I've had it. I'm sick of not being able to do anything, all the folks who come here for this and that, I mean the County folks plus the two ladies I had to hire. I've cut back their hours b'c I wanted to. I am NOT accustomed to having other folks around me all the time. But if you could have just seen me trying to balance all the newspapers from the week on my lap in the wheelchair and driving one handed and steering with my feet, I think you would have laughed a lot. Some unresolved issues but I do have an appt for next Tuesday for yet another X-ray and fingers crossed that I can start going back to my walker but since the muscles in that right leg have gone backward I'm told it will be several weeks berfore I an navigate as before. To the point, 68 yo non-petite women should not have to one hop after transferring from the wheelchair to the walker to get into the bathroom. I feel like some exotic bird that stand on one leg. Yes, I know you didn't want to hear all of that, but I'm sitting here waiting for the meals on wheel guy, whoops, here he comes, he plays his radio very loudly. |
I do have the Buck's County F1 seeds for next year. I can't remember where I saw it but one of the supplier's has the BC OP variety. It might have even been in the SSE yearbook I'm just too lazy to go look right now. :D Not sure how many generations removed it is or anything else. I will try and find it later when I have more time.

I have Bucks County F1, Bucks County F2, and a "Brandywine Red", growing side by side by side. My benchmark, BR Landis Valley strain, was chomped by a chipmunk (sigh).
I was going to compare all four, but I'll settle for the three. Gary |
Carolyn-I know that you are having fun watching the Championships-I was able to catch the Venus/Sharpova match yesterday after I posted and it was great.
You know that all of your tomato friends wish you the very best with regard to your mobility. The rehab is difficult, especially for someone who wants to be more active. I pray that it will come in time for you. We are always interested in hearing how you are doing. All the best. |
Tomatoaddict-let me know where you got them when you have time. Gary-please revisit this thread when you have fruit and can tell us about how the 3 of them compare please.
