Noir de Crimee

Am anxiously waiting the ripening of this new tomato to me as I have heard many good things concerning it.
Have anyone else out there grown it?

I was the first person in the US to receive seeds of it from a Frenchman and first listed it at SSE many years ago. So I've been growing it for a very long time, actually back to 1993.

As the name implies, it's just the French spelling of Black Krim, but I found I liked it better than the Black Krim I had been growing in terms of both taste and production.

I'm not a great lover of so called black varieties but Noire De Crimee along with Cherokee Purple, Indian Stripe, Black from Tula and Black Cherry are some I do like.

I grew Noir de Crimee last year from seed I got from Carolyn. I had three plants. All were big, vigorous plants that withstood some disease problems and aphids and continued growing until way into the fall.

The yield was high, and most of the fruits were good quality (quite a feat down here when the heat and humidity really get going). They had a strong, unusual taste. Some people that tasted them really liked them....but I was not one of them,unfortunately. My BF and I have found we don't seem to care much for any of the black types we grew last year. I don't know if was just a bad year, or an aversion to blacks....as it was our first year growing ANY blacks, I can't say. Again, others who grew out my extra plants liked the taste. They just seemed kind of odd to me. The texture of the flesh was nice, though. Kind of creamy

I have found Noir de Crimee to be one of the tastiest tomatoes that I've ever grown.

I wasn't a big fan.

The ones I grew looked like the ones in your picture.
In my case the top part, the green part was real hard and inedible. You had to cut 1/3 of the tomato off.
I hope that isn't the case with yours.

Sure enough, it is a creamy good tasting tomato but as Bully indicated, the top part that was green was not edible so I will wait and let the future maters mature more on the vine and give it another try to see how much of it ripens. I had 2 to experiment with and tried it on a bologna sandwich, in a small salad and as an appetizer with cheese melted on it...........the salad and appetizer were great but I do prefer a larger red tomato on my sandwich..........I will want to see its production for the next month or two but I will definately grow it next year..........
Now if my Black Krim and Cherokee Purple will just come on in........

I guess if that's the way the plant is and you know ahead of time then it's no big deal..but for me it got kind of UN-appetizing..the hard green part.
I never had that problem with BK..they were rounder. bigger and tasted better..with no waste
