Harvest time in Texas
I took some pictures and am trying to load them.
This is a good year so far. I started late because we had a really long, cold "winter" in Texas. But I managed to have some decent harvest. Last year my favorite is Cherokee Green, Cherokee Purple, Big Beef, Mariann's Peace, Sungold and Black Cherry. This year I am adding more to my favorite list. I like KBX a lot. Lesson: Don't grow them too close. I believe if I planted them farther I could have harvest more. My plants are growing a lot of branches and leaves and are almost 10 feet tall by now to try to reach sunshine instead of setting fruit. What a waste! Cucumber are still very small, probably won't have time to set fruit. 100F this week! Corns are looking pretty good, need to protect them from birds. |

Thanks for sharing your pictures-those tomatoes look wonderful! I like your trellis set-up;what kind of squash/cuke are you growing on it? I'm trying to trellis cukes, melons, pole beans and tromboncino squash this year and to find a way to grow my watermelons in a smaller space than they'll want to stay in!

What a nice harvest!
Are you planning to go to the Tomato Festival June 19th, Washington on the Brazos? I hope you will have some left for the Festival. Paola |

Those are very healthy looking plants and I agree about giving them a little more space. It seems each year I try to give mine more space and then end up adding some more and crowding them too much.
Try planting your cucumbers much earlier. Start them inside and move them outside every chance you can until last frost date and then put them in and pray for no late freezes. Mine are usually almost a foot long when I put them out and they get a couple of weeks of good production here before the heat starts to get them. We hit 98 a couple of days ago and then got a few days of rain giving the cucumbers a break; but the poor tomatoes will get hit harder by diseases. |

Glad you are getting a good harvest. It doesn't look good for those of us on the southern plains. Triple digits for the upcoming weekend. I guess we are in the season of August already.
