Impressive newcomers and some old reliables

Some of new to me varieties are very impressive thus far. Although I have not picked any fruit yet, as it is too early for my area.

Russian Bogytar - Large robust plant with many blossom trusses, and setting fruit. 4 so far, which is a lot considering our weather. Regular season, this would be a higher number. Hope it tastes good.

Chris Ukrainian - See above.

Moravsky Div - Setting many fruit and has many trusses. Weather doesn't seem to bother this one as much, as sets fruit readily.

Vorlon - Beautiful plant with lots of blossoms. Only one fruit so far, but maybe more coming.

Maya & Sions Airdrie Classic - this is a Brandywine and Stupice cross from Jeffery Casey. It seems to set fruit readily from its many blossom trusses.

Yasha Yugoslavian & Kosovo - not showing any fruit yet, but sure do set out a lot of bloosoms and grow like crazy.

The old standbys - Eva Puprle Ball, Sioux, and Break O Day - these three are very productive and very reliable. Sioux and BOD set fruit like there is no tomorrow, and all three taste great.

Maya & Sions Airdrie Classic - this is a Brandywine and Stupice cross from Jeffery Casey. It seems to set fruit readily from its many blossom trusses.

In the mid-90's Stanley Zubrowski from Canada sent me F1 seeds from a variety of crosses with Brandywine as one parent and short season varieties as the other parent. He was trying to get some taste into some early types. I remember Glacier and Stupice as two of them and would have to rummage around to find the others.

I offered my F2 saved seeds from all five crosses at GW where I was posting all of my free seed offers at the time.

And of all the F2 seeds for those 5 crosses that I distributed for several years in a row, as far as I know Jeff was the only one who went ahead and stabilized whatever selections he made from the initial F2 seeds.

Thanks so much Jeff. And I'm sure Stanley does as well.

Yes, those are the five, and I know Darrel got the F2's from me quite a few years ago when I offered them at GW in the 90's.

Actually he's starred only the Brandywine X Polish cross and hasn't indicated the F generation for that one or any of the others which aren't currently available.

The original F2 seeds I distributed are probably still sitting somewhere in my tomato room, so to speak, b'c I have never thrown out any of the seeds I've saved.

The ones that were most popular with folks who requested them were the crosses with Polish and Stupice as one parent. Quite a few of the F1's were the cutest mini beefsteaks but I personally never pursued any of them at the time although I did save F2 seeds from all of them.

Now that I think of it there was another person, a lady who lived in CA who went out a few generations with one of the crosses from selections she made but I don't know what became of that.

I am glad to hear that Maya & Sion's Airdrie Classic is setting fruit for you. I can't wait to hear a taste report later in the season.
