Lobed Cherokee Purple Surprise
Today I found an irregular fruit on my Cherokee Purple plant. All the other CPs on the same plant have a normal CP shape. This one is lobed rather like a Costoluto Genevese. It's kinda cute I think.
Does anyone have any idea how such an oddity can occur? If I save the seeds from this fruit would those seeds produce a plant of CPs with this interesting shape? |

Looks a lot like it may be a fused blossom.

I've had an abnormal amount of fused blossoms this year on my plants, can weather (heat in my case) cause this or is it just by chance?
Ted, your Avatar made me lol, I have one beefsteak tomato from two fused blossoms, one side is ripe red and the other still green. I'll try to remember to get a pic tomorrow. |

Fred,
A couple years back I had some Sandul Moldovan seed from Tomatofest that grew a few plants with "smooth" fruit and one or two plants with fruit that looked lobed as you call it. They all tasted the same, yet I saved seed from both and labeled them accordingly to their looks. The next season I planted equal amounts of each. They all grew to look exactly alike...smooth! What caused those earlier two plants to grow all their fruit lobed? Haven't a clue, but mother nature straighted it all out. To this day its still one of the best tasting fruits out there! Enjoy!
