Why not Orange as top winners 4 flavor?

Curious to know why Orange types are never picked as favorites here on tomatoville??

Kellogg's Breakfast, and its mate, KBX have often been named as favorite tomatoes. I plant one or the other every year.

Well, people's tastes differ and different folks grow different orange varieties all the time and not every growout will show the taste potential of a varity based on where it's grown and what the weather is in any given season.

I have never posted a list of taste favorites b'c I know that for every one that I might rate highly someone else will say it's a spitter for them.

And I suppose that's the way it should be.

I thought what I said was what I really did say, meaning no, I have no secret orange variety.

I've been thinking about orange tomatoes lately. It seems of the ones I've grown, they're either wonderful or blah (in taste and/or production), nothing in-between.

One of my favorites this year is an orange: Tobolsk. It's the most productive of my best-tasting ones and the best-tasting of the most productive ones, out of about 16 of my "first string" -- I have about 20 more late-planted tomatoes that are just starting to ripen.

I'm also growing Sweet Horizon, which had such a mealy texture I didn't want to eat them, so I cooked them and they're wonderful as a cooked tomato.

A few years ago, one of my favorites was Orange Strawberry.

This was my first year growing KBX and I absolutely loved it. I still want a tomato with a little more zip for my number one; but it would be in my top 5 for beefsteaks every time if it tastes as good every year as it did this year.
It was also my first year growing Sungold hybrid and it was my favorite cherry ever.

Bill, did KBX set good for you in the heat we had this summer??
I've never grown an orange because I figured it would

Actually, I see Sungold as a consistent top 3 and even #1 favorite tomato.
Of course if you're looking for indeterminate favorites, the
KB and KBX varieties are always listed in the top 10 by some
folks. I like Orange Heirloom in my top 10 or so....

I love KBX but yes it's never been #1 in my taste trials but certainly top 5 to 10. For many years Sun Gold is the only cherry I grow. I bet Sun Gold would win a lot of top tasting cherry polls...

One of the big winners at this year's Midwest Tomato Fest was PaulF's Orange Russian #117 - that was a fantastic tomato and Kellogg's is always #1 or #2 - generally we have 5-6 tied for #1 and #2. Piegirl

But, but, Orange Russian #117 isn't an orange variety, it's a typiucal gold/red bicolor although a heart.

Jeff Dawson crossed Russian #117m wgucg us a red double heart with Geirgia Streak, a gold/re bicolor beefsteak and selected for a heart form which he named Orange Russian # 117. I should grow it again b'c I wasn't all that impressed the first time I grew it.

I love the oranges - love the bright sunny taste! So far Persimmon has been my favorite and Nebraska Wedding has done very well for me this year. Elbe is another very nice one that is usually overlooked. Every time I plant KBX the seed doesn't germinate (tried a variety of sources), so I am still waiting to try that one.

Persimmon is absolutely delicious. I'll be shocked if I like KB or KBX as much.
