Default What is your best of season so far this year?

Just wondering what everyone's best of season list looks like this early into the season? I know it is early, especially for folks up north, but I am always intersted to hear what is doing well for other folks. It is never too early to start developing my list for next year! Here is my contribution so far (Note: all of the selections below are to date as of 6/20/11)

Best Flavor (non cherry): Stump of the World
Best Flavor (cherry): Black Cherry
Largest Fruit: Mortgage Lifter (Radiator Charlie)
Most Productive Plant: Matina
First Ripe (non cherry): Paul Robeson
First Ripe (cherry): (Tie) Black Cherry, Sungold, Matt's Wild Cherry

I've had three different varieties thus far, Danko, Reif Red Heart and Japanese Black Triefle x Brandywine Sudduth f1 all of which were mealy and mushy. Kind of hard to determine whats best so far when you cant get past that mushy mealy texture. Good to hear your doing so well so soon!

I've only harvested one tomato so far. It was a Tigerella. It was quite delicious and much sweeter than I anticipated. Not a fleshy mater, more gel, but nontheless very good flavor.

I have harvested only a few
Bloody Butcher has been the best flavor
Black and Brown Boar was good but not great yet
Carbon was also good but a little mealy but its early in the season
Stupice and Kimberley both good and early as usual
Big Beef first to ripen and not mealy but just ok on flavor

Overall I am happy because it is only June and the real flavor will be here soon

Way too early to set fruit here yet.
Fastest growing tomato that draws my attention is a orange 1, that some one sent me. And the hoy plants are extremely vigorous and they are catching up to the others that were a month or more earlier.

Earliest: Fourth Of July hybrid / 55 days
Earliest Non hybrid: Black Krim/ 60 days / Mortgage Lifter / 65 days
Heaviest Producer: Fourth Of July, Mortgage Lifter, Hillbilly, Brandywine Pink, Black Krim
Best Tasting: Mortgage Lifter, Brandywine, Hillbilly, Cherokee Purple, Black Krim
Best Hybrid: Super Fantastic, Big Beef (taste and production)

Not impressed by: KBX, Pineapple, Gary Ibsen's Gold, German Johnson RL, Box Car Willie, Mr. Stripey, Cherokee Purple (production), Brandywine Yellow, Homestead, Mountain Pride

Total Flop: Rutgers (The plant loaded up with green fruit and died from disease before any ripened)

Best Cherry (in order) Black Cherry, Sungold, Juliet, (as always, Juliet was the heaviest producer. It's a shame the taste comes up short)

Didn't get a fair shot due to weather and will try again next year: Carbon, Arbruznia, Jaune Flamme, Al-Kuffa, Orange Minsk, Tarasenko 6, Berkley Tie-Dye Pink

Blew me away: Mortgage Lifter, Hillbilly, Black Krim, Brandywine Pink, Fourth Of July

Total yield so far is 4 Sunsugar F1 tomatoes. They are consistently good throughout the season. Looking forward to more!

I have thirteen tiny tim tomatoes in one gallon pots all are giving me 2 to 4 tomatoes every day. They might be small but they taste great. A couple with cracker and cheese and I'm in heaven.

Earliest-Purple Russian-but cracks badly
Best taste-Cherokee Purple
Heaviest producer so far Marglobe-just amazing!
Biggest- Aussie- 18 ounces
Disappointing-Reisentraube but need to try dehydrating before really deciding as that is what I was really planning on using it for
Still waiting on Black from Tula, Arkansas Traveler, Mexico, Amish paste and Speckled Roman

We've harvested about 6 teeny tiny Mexico Midgets! That's it so far....

But the first non-cherry, Fruhe Liebe, should be pickable in a few days.

Fruit set looks really good, so there will be a plethora of things to eat in 2-3 weeks, I predict!

Craig,

I'm in zone 7b and my spring/early summer production is near the end. I've already pruned some plants back to encourage secondary growth for a late summer and fall crop of tomatoes. You are in zone 7/8 which I interpret as 7b also, but you don't expect to hit peak production for two or three weeks. What factors do you think delay your peak production period so far into the summer past mine? My primary plant out date was March 7, when was yours?

Ehhhxcellent! What sucks is I planted out before you did, but the conditions have been adverse. Cool nights early in the Spring causing blossom drop, immediately followed by intensely hot and humid days.

Our weather conditions been less than ideal, and herbicide damage didn't help either. But still, first fruits from 10 and 18 gal containers been coming in since May 15th.

Noire de Crimmee
is always early, far better than store bought tomatoes, but not as intense taste as some other "blacks", plentiful clusters of uniformed fruit!

Jaune Flamme is a nice surprise for an early variety, with pleasant sweet/tangy taste and beautiful little fruits

Lambada is always early, plentiful and very nicely balanced for such early tomato

Taxi
has been very generous this year with many mild tasting fruits.

Danko, while productive and attractive, somehow little on the bland side...

Dynnye, a winner, 2nd one to ripen from the main garden (right after Black Krim). I usually take a photo of the first fruit, once it's sliced, but this one didn't make it. Amazing, all flesh fruit, very similar in taste and density to the best oxheart tomatoes which I'm partial to. Sweetness, almost tropical like undertones, thick, yet juicy, enough acid to make it exciting, love at the first bite! Definitely will return to the garden next year!
