I'm very excited to try these. I ended up with 4 plants, which I have planted in 2 different locations.

I understand they are not stable yet, so we're supposed to select the best one and save seed, correct?

What I'm wondering is - how do I decide? Whatever I like best? Or is there a target size, color, and taste that we're looking for?

Vince said they were close to being stable or maybe are already, but you should see that with your 4 plants , hopefully.

If all are alike then taste the fruits from each plant to be sure they are the same, save seeds and grow it next year.

If the plants have different sized and tasting fruits, or colored fruits, whoch I doubt for the color comment, then make your selection (s), save the seeds and grow again next year.

Should we be expecting a cherry size fruit, or a slightly larger saladette size? Could we get a description of exactly what Vince was working towards? I kept three plants, one is noticeable smaller, but it could just be a late sprouting runt. Passed on some others to my sister, so will have to check with her when they bear.

Oh ok, if they're stable or almost, that's great. But it would be nice, if possible, to have the description of what Vince was looking for.

I believe they're supposed to be purple. I'm particularly curious about the ideal size. Me - I love bigger cherries. But perhaps these are supposed to be the size of sungolds?

I can't wait to taste these!

Thanks for the link, Carolyn -- I must have missed that discussion the first time around. It will be fun to compare the results of my three plants, and see pictures of what others come up with. Vince -- thanks for sharing this cross!

Been out of the loop for a bit and will probably continue to not visit as much as I used to. To much going on. This is a special cross for me, since it was my first and actually the most difficult to make. I have MANY variations in color and size-goodwin and some others grew out saladette and larger varients. My goal is to get something that looks like black cherry (or choc varient) with sungold flavor. I grew maybe thirty plants out last year at a surrogate location, but didn't keep labels accurate-so scratched those results. P1 means purple number 1(out of 15 purples) and had flavor in the top 4 of those. I didn't really intend for the seeds to be spread out like they are now, so understand if I am not fully involved in this particular grow out in th future. That being said, I am interested in what you all find and most importantly have fun exploring! If anyone finds anything truely exeptionally tasting in the sungold size, send me a PM. For those who like jumbo cherries, I have selections for these-but will be a while till I get back to it.

Vince, I'm delighted you had the time to post and share with us your views.

I offered the following in the Experimental section of my recent seed offer in January:

EXPERIMENTAL VARIETIES ( I usually send more seeds of these with the assumption that larger growouts will be done.

Vince P1, no name yet, F4 seeds to me from Vince, so offering F5 seeds, a very dark purplish cherry. A selection from a cross between Sungold and Cherokee Purple.

Indian Stripe X possibly Daniels (PL), a natural cross form Bill Jeffers growouts. My F3 seeds from Suze, who got some segregation with the F3’s, but selected this one, which is a very large deep pink, PL, and with great taste. No final variety name yet.

Ambrosia, bred by Lee Goodwin, Tville member, an OP Sungold type. Craig and I got fruits that were gold and very tasty. Lee, who was doing seed production got red fruits, so that’s what I’m offering here, with Lee G’s approval. At his seed website he offers Ambrosia in three colors, a red, a pink and a gold. I’m not sure what will come out of these seeds

Kardia Karpas. NOT a variety name, seed from Tormato. Complicatred background. Look for the thread in the discussion area titled Kardia Karpas for that info and the results of others. Finding pink hearts was the goal, but who knows what else might appear.


So I had given the background for each of the above.

The germination thread for my varieties was next, still around, and in that thread some folks asked what was expected from your cross as well as Bill Jeffers cross, as I recall. I linked to your Purple Sungold thread more than once as I recall.

Then someone put up this thread and again I linked to your thread.

Next comes the thread I put up in late summer, early Fall, where folks give feedback on what they grew and what they thought of the varieties as to taste and production, etc.

There were a lot of folks who requested Vince P1 but the problem was, from my viewpoint, that many were quite new to doing growouts of varieties that may not be yet stable, so, despite what I said in the original seed offer, probably set out only a plant, maybe two, with some exceptions.

I do hope you'll have time to at least take a look at what folks thought of P1 and for sure I'll remind them in the first post in that thread to be sure to PM you if they did get something that was Sungold size, dark colored and had great taste.

The way I see it, the more folks that grow out a selection from a cross, the greater is the chance of finding something great and fingers crossed that will happen with P1. And if you look back at your original thread you said you wanted to send me seeds and I asked for something perhaps close to stability, from those that you were offering to others as well, and near stability b'c I can no longer do growouts with large numbers of plants, as I think you knew. Thus I thought it best to let others do the growouts which I thought would help you best.

Have you been doing growouts from it yourself, and if so, what have you found.

I want to thank you for being such a strong contributor to the Dwarf Project with several crosses. I am really amazed at the few varieties I've grown that Craig sent me the plants for, and even before they were stable, but close to it. I think all of the folks in the Dwarf Project should be very proud of what they've accomplished to date and what might appear in the future.

Who knows what might come of a cross between a true Purple Sungold and, well, right now I can't remember all the lines going or done, but I sure would like to see some more dwarfs with cherry sized fruits.

Lastly, I really do agree with your comment above about having fun exploring, b'c that's what it's all about as I see it.

Glad to hear from you Vince. I have 4 plants out, in two locations. It'll be interesting to see if I get black cherry size, or sungold size or both. I am growing sungold also, so I can directly compare the taste. You said you wanted them to look like black cherry, I'll be delighted, as I love that size. I really look forward to tasting these!

I have 3 plants that were strong enough to go out to the garden, and they are now starting to fruit. So it won't be that long, now, to find out what I have!

I noticed the shape of the flower bud is different from both Sungold (F1) and CP, sort of a little fluted outwards at the bottom. It is different from all the cherries that I am growing (Sungold, Black Cherry, Honeydrop, Ambrosia, and Green Zebra Cherry). The plants are not growing quite as fast as Sungold F1, but definitely faster than CP.

I'd have to go check the germination thread but I planted all my seeds and believe I had 100% germination, so I now have more than twenty plants growing and looking great :-)

I got 8 seeds from Carolyn and planted all, but only 3 germinated. All three are in the garden and looking great. I am also growing Sungold this year (the first time for me) to more directly compare size and taste. I can't wait until the first ripe P1, but it probably won't be until mid-August. Thanks Vince and Carolyn for letting me help.
