Black Plum
Anyone ever grow it? I think I'm growing it accidentally. I'm not excited about it at all, kind of have a redheaded-stepchild relationship with it--something about the false provenance I received it under, color, and obnoxious productivity--but I've never tried a ripe one. How do you all feel about it?

I grew it two years ago. It was tasty! I was somehow expecting a larger fruit, like a san marzano, but it was small, a cherry sized plum.
It was pretty productive and I liked the flavor. Different than most tomatoes, I've heard folks call it "smokey", don't know if I'd say that, but it was complex. |

I don't care for it fresh, but it's our #1 sauce and salsa tomato. IMO, it's unsurpassed in that role. I planted two Black Plum this year and, unfortunately, lost one to wilt.

I also grew it... evidently a few Black Plum seeds were mixed in the packet of Cherokee Chocolate I purchased a few years ago, as it grew both Cherokee Chocolate and a black plum tomato that looked exactly like the pictures of Black Plum. I liked the taste (and got the same tomato with saved seeds). The only negative I saw about it was that it tended to crack quite a bit if you let it ripen completely on the vine.

I like it a lot. I grew it on purpose 2 years and another year got a mislabeled seedling (was supposed to be Black Cherry). It's productive and tasty, and I enjoyed eating the fruits in the garden. Even when I got the mislabeled one, I was happy to grow it. I got a free Black Plum plant this year, and I'm looking forward to the harvest.
Has anyone tried drying Black Plum? |
