More Heirlooms From My Garden
Hi everyone!!
Here are some more heirlooms freshly picked. The first one is a Paul Robeson which is a black tomato that I will slice and taste today. The second is a Grandfather Ashlock which is a pink beefsteak from a PL variety. The third is an Uncle Mark Bagby also from a PL variety. I must also taste these as well. Julia

Those are so nice looking. How do you get them to ripen so evenly?
The Paul Robeson slices don't look like they will fit on a sandwich too good so you better just eat it plain. |

Your right about the Paul Robeson, I'm going to have to just slice and enjoy!! Julia

They look beautiful Julia - congrats! BTW - I'm living in Rochester, NY now, but grew up in Philly (N.E. Philly) and lived in Newtown, Bucks County for 10 years - 1996 - 2006.

Now your getting into the good stuff! Those look great and certainly look to me to be worthy of some crispy smoked pork...

Those look very tasty. A slice of whole wheat toast, a thick slice of garden ripe fresh tomato, a slice of Swiss cheese, and some bacon crumbles, heat under broiler until cheese melts, sit back and ENJOY!

I got my first Paul Robeson this morning, too. I came close to picking it yesterday, but had left it on the plant overnight and wouldn't you know it... a bird got to it first! I just cut off that part and it was so delicious!

Those darn birds Robin!!!
I'm so sorry they keep haunting you. I am glad however that you were able to cut off the chewed area and enjoyed it anyway!!!

Your tomatoes look great as always. Keep up the great work!
I'm so envious as I have yet to pick a red beefsteak yet....just started with the Amy's Sugar Gem(golf ball size) a few days ago and my daughter picked a Wild Fred last week that was definitely a few days early but she was eager for a slice. I have an Omar that will be ready in just a few days. Once it hits, the floodgates will open. My Mr Mark Bagby is loaded but none are blushing yet. Grew Ashlock last year and the plant seemed to attract all the bugs in the garden to it. Didn't put it back on the grow list. Keep the photos coming!

When I saw your Paul Robeson and showed the photo to my wife, she commented that she purchased a Black Prince heirloom (Siberian) from the store and it had great flavor. Since then I have checked it out and, in general, everyone agrees with my wife's view. I will be trying the Black Prince tomato next year. Found some testimonies here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/99309/#b

I got to thinking about it and realized that I don't have the room to plant all of the tomato varieties that I would like to. It will become a juggling act in the Spring. Actually, at the nearby community college, Reedley College, they have a community garden and I will look into getting a plot to plant my tomatoes in - only about a mile away.
