Default Creepy Blush Tomato

I screamed when I first saw this a few days ago, thinking it was a worm coming out of a Blush tomato. Then I realized that snake-like appendage was part of the tomato. I've since become very attached to this tomato, and I've named it Medusa. What causes these strange appendages?

Not sure what causes it, but peaches do it, too. Just ate it though.

We get odd appendages on eggplant too. Especially on the fruit that sets late in the season. i don't know what causes it but cooler weather seems to be a factor.
