Sun Cherry F1
Has anyone tried Sun Cherry F1? Supposed to be a sister to the Sungold line. I am growing it but just started seeds a few weeks ago. Curious to know what people think of it.
I got the seeds from TGS but it seems they are not carrying it anymore. Marsha |

I grew them 2 yrs ago and have not planted any since. Whoever named them as a "sister" to Sungold was probably just trying to hype up sales. I wouldn't even call them distant cousins. Suncherry was okay, in the general way that most red cherries taste, not outstanding. If it was that good, don't you think it would show up constantly on Best Cherries lists here at TVille?
I'm not saying you won't like them, but I don't think they have that WOW factor. |

Grew them once, not twice. The only thing memorable was the name.

These things seem like they are just about in Yellow Pear territory ( extreme spitter).

I am not sure if the suncherry F1 sold by different companies are actually the same. I bought my seeds 2 years ago from Thompson & Morgan (they claimed it to be Sungold's little sister). It was very productive, tiny bit bigger than Sungold, and tasted great. Overall, it was just as good as Sungold if not a bit better, and Sungold has been my all time favorite cherry.
Johnny's was also selling one version of it. From the description even the pictures, I don't think it is the same thing as T&M's. |

Thanks for the info Zipcode, I did wonder at the different descriptions. I might try the Extra Sweet version as well next year, but Suncherry Premium will take some beating! |

There are 4 versions of Suncherry. Premium (most easily found), Pure, Extra sweet and Smile.
Now if you know japanese you could see what the differences are on their page. In short, premium is like all around good, no splitting, productive, good shelf life, etc. Extra sweet is best tasting (it's just called extra in japanese), pure is for greenhouse in winter. Smile... not sure. What I like in this thread is how everyone just says: I like it or I don't like it. Maybe some more in depth as to why (bland, too sweet, too tart, thick skin, splits, not productive, too late, etc). |

When I popped it in my mouth I was hoping for a good, memorable flavor. I swished it around and around and then bit down on it with my left molar. I let it sit there for a second then moved it with my tongue over to the right molar, letting it pause for another second in the middle of my tongue where the tomato taste buds are to see if some saturation might occur. Then I completed the transition to the right molar where I clamped down hard. It was then that it completely squished into a puree. I manipulated my tongue some more to spread the puree over the entire inside of my mouth to coat any taste buds that might have been missed, still looking for some memorable flavor. Lastly, I moved my adam's apple up, setting the stage for a swallow but pausing, giving the Suncherry one last chance to emit some sort of pleasurable flavor but alas, it was not to be and down the hatch went the poor little Suncherry. From there, it turned into some sort of stomach fluid and I stopped paying attention, except for when it came out.
