Composting forum

I know that composting forums can get heated (sorry about that) but what are folks thoughts on this. I make a lot of aerobic teas and normal compost for my vegie patch and like to hear other folks ideas and what they do to make their soil better.

The idea of having a composting forum has been fermenting in my mind for a while. It's so mouch part of growing anything. I am for it.

Very small scale (in a Can O Worms), yes.

Compost forums are fine *until* someone comes in praising the merits of one way above all others (like aerated compost teas) and then someone says 'bah, I don't buy all that' and then sides form and things get ugly.

*If * that can be avoided then I think a compost forum would be a fine thing. I don't believe I have yet seen a composting forum that was able to avoid the 'preachy' debate type stuff though.

True, there are sites out there where composting can be discussed. Then again there are sites out there where one can discuss tomatos as well.

I guess what *this* site needs is a clear vision.

While it seems to have originally been a website for Garden Web tomato forum regulars to seek refuge from the annoying pop ups and villiage idiot policies of 'that other site', it appears to be undergoing some growing pains.

There are polls to determine if there should be a general veggie forum and there are already seperate forums for herbs, potatos and peppers (are there others yet?).

For me as a simple member I really have nothing invested one way or another, I tend to run into many of the same folks in my forum travels.

It does seem to me though that the powers that be behind this site provide some direction on where it is going.

Is it to remain a tomato only site? If so, why the non tomato forums? Is it to become a more general site? If so, why not a compost forum?

Again, I don't really care one way or the other (not entirely true), but this site seems to lack direction in terms of what it will or will not become. Not a huge deal, but I guess I don't understand why one request to have a herb or potato forum would get acted on, but a request to have a compost or veggie forum may or may not get acted upon.

What is the criteria used to determine whether a request will or will not be implemented? It can't possibly be whether or not the topic is adequately covered by another forum since gardenweb covers most everything even if the current owners are the [i]villiage idiots.

I think they are getting people's opinions and will then make a final decision.

The MicroHerd is a group of the former GW composting
forum. Some of their members could probably be considered experts in the art of composting.
Thus, adding a forum here would be reinventing the wheel when there's a suitable expert driven alternative to GW elsewhere that has openly invited TV members to stop by.

As for the potato forum... there is probably no public forum anywhere else that has an expert the level of Tom Wagner on the art of growing potatoes. This alone justifies that forum here.

As for peppers and eggplant... they are in the same family as tomatoes, and thus have some of the same issues (nutirition, disease) as tomatoes, and thus fit in smoothly.

While I think it would be great to have an alternative to GW to talk veggies other than those listed here, I suspect
it would only dilute the resources that are available here to devote to the current forums.

This reminds me of the town meeting I attended Monday night. Out of 11,000 registered voters, only 61 people showed up to vote on how to spend the taxpayer's money.

From The Webster Times:

“At the meeting’s conclusion, Kennan came forward, saying that since it was his last town meeting as acting Town Administrator, he wished to thank the town employees and voters, but warned if the town wanted their form of government to “survive,” more action and participation was needed from the public.

Kennan said out of Webster’s 11,000 registered voters, only 61 were present at the meeting.

“Sixty-one people should not be deciding [a multi-million dollar] budget,” Kennan said.

“I wish you all well.” Kennan closed.

His remarks roused thunderous applause before the

That reminds me of the time a few years ago in a small town I lived in.
I had to stand up for my rights and threaten the people I worked for so I could come in out of the oil field to vote.
We always worked late and by the time I would have came to town the poles would have been closed.
It was on weather the town needed a new hospital or not.
All of the town big wigs would have been there but us poor oil field trash would have been at work.
So they would have had the deciding vote on the matter, which a new hospital would have taken money out of their pockets as they and one of two doctors in town owned stock in the old hospital.

I was told by my employer (one of the stock holders I think) that my vote didn’t count; I blew up and said I would get a lawyer (uncle in-law is one) so fire me, ‘which they didn’t.
Well anyway out of about 5,000 people in town the vote came down to about 57 for and 47 against.
I was one of the 57 so my vote did count, ‘we got the new hospital.

I have always been a rabble rouser when it comes to my rights.

You just need to add a controversial article or two to the warrant, like spending a few million on a senior center, buying conservation land, or building a school or library. That usually does it around here. :wink:
