The correct name is Sara Black as named by Joe Bratka when he bred it.

http://t.tatianastomatobase.com:88/wiki/Sara_Black

Somewhere someone changed it to German, sosometimes you do see it listed as you asked above.

If you look at the above link you'll see references to Joe getting it from someone in Germany but that's sheer fantasy since Joe made a major change, and his father did breed some good ones, and decided that if folks wanted heirloom varieties he would breed them

And so he did.

And if you look at the listings at Tania's website, not just thelink above, you'll see he bred red ones and pink ones, etc., but Bill Minkey, a good friend of mine believed that what Joe was saying was true.

Yes, I've grown it several times, the black one.

I was juust looking in my SSE Yearbook and there are lots of listings for it, some saying red/black, others purple/black and some saying lilac/ black, all to say it really isn't black, but then few named Black ones aren't black either.

Most who list it have taste comments ranging from good to very good to excellent.

And while reading those listings it reminded me that yes, Joe said it was from his grandmothers sister in Germany.

Fact is,Joe had to relatives left in Germany.

And yes, I knew Joe Bratka, he passed away a few years ago, I think better than anyone

Hope that helps,

Carolyn, who notes that the only true heirlooms Joe had were Marizol Gold, Marizol Purple and Eva Purple Ball. It was his father here in the US who bred the whole series of Box Car Willie, Mule Team and the rest of them.

OK fearlesly ignorant question time: is Marizol a person's name, or what does it mean in English? WasMarizol a relative of Joe's?

I only found out the derivation of the word Marizol when I was teaching a student from Germany at the time.

I knew that the two Marizols were from the Black Forest in Germany where Joe's parents came from..

She said there was a small village in the Black Forest called Maria's Zell, which means Maria's village or town and that Marizol was a contraction of that, with which I agreed.

Girls name means Mary of solitude in Spanish.
contracted from Maria de la soledad.
Meaning Mary of the solitude.

Not uncommon for Germans and others of Europe to use Spanish or Latin names.

Quiz my middle name means clearing or meadow.

Worth, please see my post #6 for the origin of the name Marizol.

So what do you want us to do, guess what your REAL middle name is?

If it's Meadow,nope, I just can't do it.

Oh Sheesh imp, I'll try to remember.

Box Car Willie
Mule Team
Red Barn
Great Divide
Lady Luck
Pasture

I cheated and looked in my heirloom tomato book under Box Car Willie where I had listed them all/

Joe had found them in glass jars in the tool shed, already named, couldn't germinate any of them so sent them to me and I was able to germinate the ones above but there were two I could not germinate and always wondered what they would have been. I think one might have been named Meadow.

Pasture is an intersting one since it's a rampant red cherry that I'm told grows faster than Kudzu vine in the south.

My fave of the above is Red Barn,

Carolyn

Wow, thanks!

Do you know where I could locate seed for Pasture, Great Divide and Lady Luck? I can find the others. The cherry sounds like one I would love!

The thread is really about whicho nes Joe Bratka's father bred so

yes,

For Great Divide and Red Barn

Joe bred Isis candy and many more, I'll link to this thread which should help

OK, the link is bad will have to refetch when I have time

If you go to Tanias website the history for Boondocks is not correct. Joe had nothing to do with it,he got it in trade from a magazine and there never was any history with it.

As you can see in the above thread Joe's niece turned up which was a shock to me since Joe said he had no living reltives and I'l let you read that link to see what his niece also said about him which I already knew about.

He had no computer and if you called him and he didn't recognize your voice on themachine he would hang up.

I don't know if it's in the above link but several of us tracked down his parents from Germany to the US using immigration records as well.
