Sean's Yellow Dwarf - Red Mutant?
Anyone plant Sean's Yellow Dwarf recently? I bought some seed from Remy and my two plant outs came out oddly red. At first I thought maybe it was just one fruit, but the second fruit came out red too, and the others are also turning red now.
I'm wondering if I maybe accidentally received some other Dwarf Tomato Project seed or maybe I just happened to get a mutant. I looked threw the descriptions of the other project tomatoes and their corresponding pictures, but I can't seem to find one that fits what I have, which is why I'm leaning towards it being a mutant. |

Look in the Dwarf Project section for Witty that is the family Sean's Yellow Dwarf belongs to.
One of the colors observed in that family was red. It is just that the genes for Sean's Yellow Dwarf haven't been 100% sorted out and that's why you got a red tomato from seeds from a yellow plant. Its a beautiful tomato. How does it taste? Susan |

Brix comes in at 7.0 PH 4.04 It has larger seed cavities than pictures of SYD on tomatobase and victoryseeds. Last edited by Scooty; August 3, 2016 at 07:59 PM. |

Scooty,
Are you saying you planted two plants and they both produced red fruit? Is it a potato leaf or a regular leaf? Steve |

The foliage in your pic looks potato leaf - could just be a bad angle.
Susan does make a good point - we've seen large red fruit in the Witty line, but once a recessive trait gets worked out, it is very unusual for it to flip back to the dominant color. Sean's YD is a pretty large tomato - it can go to 8-10 ounces, a few even more, though it averages more in the 6-8 range. Shape looks pretty correct. If it is indeed potato leaf, wonder if somehow some Sweet Scarlet Dwarf seed got in there (different line/variety completely)

Have you contacted Remy about it and asked her opinion since I assume she did some seed production before she listed it so she'd have enough seeds to list it at her website.

I plan to email Remy in a bit, but it's really not a huge deal for me. I'm mainly asking, because before I save any seed, I wanted to see if this tomato corresponds to an existing dwarf project tomato or if I should just consider it a mutant. Last edited by Scooty; August 3, 2016 at 10:41 PM. |

Hmmm... I haven't had anyone else contact me with an issue, but it is still early. I did grow and save from my own tomatoes. So there's a few possibilities.
One is that I messed up and mixed seeds together in the fall and somehow Mt. Princess seeds got mixed in with the Sean's as it is the only det. type plant with red fruit I grew last year (well I did grow Sophie's Choice too, but you would recognize that,) but there would be the correct seeds too. If you only grew two plants, it could be an unlucky draw. Two is that I accidentally put seeds of Tanunda Red or Waratah that I received from the DTP in the packet instead of Sean's. My dwarf/det. seeds are separated S-Z so there is a limited choice of what could go in a packet by mistake. Or Three it is off type plants still, and there are reds mixed in because of that and you again got unlucky with the two plants. Whatever way though something went wrong so I most definitely owe you a new packet of seeds. Remy

Remy would also know if anyone else has reported the issue. I'm sure she would want to hear about it.

Hmm.... I looked up Mt. Princess and in some pictures it seems round and others beefsteak/oblate shaped, so I'm not sure what's the correct form I should compare it against... Thoughts?
I definitely know it's not Sophie's Choice. I ordered that from you as well, and those are distinctly very short, 1-2'. Can't mistake those. This red unknown dwarf that originally thought was Sean's Yellow Dwarf is about 49" tall. The fourth possibility is that I mislabeled it from one of the dwarfs that Tormato, Cole_Robbie, or Barb_FL sent me. However, all of those have been accounted for (Purple Heart, Choc Champ, Taz Choc, Sweet Scarlet, Arctic Rose, Sweet Adelaide, Rosella Purple, Rosella Crimson, Wild Fred). It's not PL, so the possibilities are limited - it would either have to be Arctic Rose or Sweet Adelaide. But the AR from Tormato looks quite different. And the latter is suppose to be more pink (from what I understand) than red. I'd love to see if there's a way to definitively cross Tanunda Red or Waratah off the list of possibilities. Any specific pictures I should provide? |

I do have photos of the tomatoes on my site, but they are not very helpful with ID since it is fruit with no plants. Here's my Mountain Princess photo. They are oblate when grown well, normally not much ribbing, but you can see a bit of it in my fruit in the photo. http://seedsample.com/wp-content/upl...2/mountain.jpg

Hmm... If there isn't much ribbing, it seems unlikely to be Mt. Princess. I can provide more pictures of my plant/fruit if needed, but every single fruit is ribbed, even at the smaller immature fruit. What does the plant look like?

This whatever it is has some of the most prominent ribbing on any of the dwarf tomato project 'matos I've either seen in pictures or tried myself - reminds me a bit of some of the italian heirlooms.

Sean's Yellow Dwarf has no ribbing.
I suspect a mixed up seed or recent cross. Lee

If it's a stray seed, the list of candidates is limited, and we'll know pretty quickly in the next grow out if it's a cross. I don't really plan to grow it out, but I would like to solve the mystery. Craig was kind enough to accept my box of "mutants"/unknown fruits, and since the DTPs are his domain, I'll defer to him to make the final judgement when he grows it out. |
