can hydroponics be talked about here?
Looking for information about growing tomatoes using a Deep Water system.
Is there anyone out here in Tomatoville doing this? If you know of any sources for education not places to buy equipment, I sure would appreciate links, physical places or science related books with information. Dr Nate Storey has some good videos regarding hydroponics. Aquaponics as well. Look up the University of the Virgin Islands. They have some good info. also.

Yup.
Akmark, rajun cajun and myself gro hydro. There are more, but not off the top of my head. I think we all use media of some sort. You'll be doing some pioneering work with tomatoes in DWC. |

Read an article about the Membrane Meniscus Method, tight spaces can be exploited to the max.
A big pdf, about to print it out and really read it. Thank you Andrew Parker. http://www.membranemeniscusmethod.co...droponices.pdf http://hydroponicsociety.org/massive-tomato-yield/ 100 plants per m2??? |

I had a DWC setup in my greenhouse a couple of years ago with lettuce and tomatoes in it. I had planned it as an experiment to see if I could get earlier production than my in-ground plants in the high tunnel, but I could not. Everything grew fine, but I abandoned the experiment because the hydro plants ended up being slower than the ground.
I used water movement to aerate. I just pumped the water into a pvc manifold above the root zone and let it drop from overhead. Keeping a consistent reservoir temperature is very challenging. Mine was a 4x8 box on the ground, lined with sand, then a pond liner. My lid was fiberglass paneling sandwiched around styrofoam insulation. It worked great for the plants, but it killed my back to bend down so far. |

Thanks everyone for your links and feed back. Two lessons from just reading the posts without going to the links,
Too low, not good for the back... pioneering work with tomatoes in DWC. is this not something commonly done? I know very little so far, so this is all new to me. Now to check out the links. Thanks Zeroma |
