Default How long to wait to re-sow?

I know that older seeds and perhaps some varieties take longer to germinate than others, but generally, how long do you wait for sprouts before sowing more seeds?
If you first start 6-8 weeks before last frost and wait anywhere from 14 to 18 days for them to sprout and they don't, then you've lost quite a bit of time...
Could anyone enlighten me on this aspect?
I think I'm having one of those Doh! moments...
Thanks!
Cathy

I don't wait 2 weeks if I start 6 weeks before plant out. I wait 5 days. If everything eventually sprouts, I give the plants away. People are very appreciative when receiving nice heirloom plants.
