Default Brown spots at nodes

I’m not sure this is a pest situation, so I’m posting here.

I found 3 blank and brown spots at the nodes of this plant. I did surgery on 2 spots but could not find a worm or bordered. I pulled a 5 mm yellow worm off but can’t believe it could cause this.

The second photo shows pretty deep surgery. I sprayed copper and splinted area. The top is still good after 2 days surprisingly. Will this survive, or is it futile?

Any thoughts would be very appreciated
