Default Ribbon winners at the fair

I entered my Black Cherry tomatoes in the Medina County fair and they won 1st place. I'll post pics as soon as I can.
Also won 2nd for my pecan pie and 3rd for pickles.
I only entered 3 things and all of them won a ribbon. First year ever entering anything.
Sorry for tootin' my own horn.

Toot away, but don't forget the pics. I don't know how these things work. Do they judge on looks, taste, or both? Are there different categories for shape and color or all the tomatoes lumped together?

Is it a chore to make pickles?

I'd like to make some garlic Manhattan Deli style pickles myself. I miss those great tasting pickles at the New York deli's.

Bigdaddy- I like to make what I call refrigerator pickles. I mix up the brine, prep the cucumbers, jar it all up and stick it in the fridge. About 5-7 days later, they taste pickley. I never have to worry about storing them, because they get eaten quickly and I have takers for extras. I don't bother with the whole processing the jars thing for pickles, since I just keep them refrigerated.

I also make refrigerator pickles because I have a ceramic cooktop and it's not recommended for canning. I just posted a recipe for refrigerator bread and butter pickles here last night. Made another batch today. I think it's listed under recipes for veggies other than tomatoes.

Congratulations!!! That is exciting!
Our county fair was too early this year. There was hardly any produce at all. My kids entered some pastel chalk drawings they made and got blue ribbons, and I got a blue ribbon for a photo I took in Puerto Rico. The county fair is great because there are no fees to enter. At the state fair you have to pay to enter. Last year we probably broke even at the State fair, maybe made a dollar or two is all. It is fun for the kids, that's why I do it. I almost didn't enter anything at the county fair a few weeks ago with my husband out of town I was really busy, but Grandma came to the rescue and got out her art supplies and gave the kids an art lesson.

Anyway, I can't wait to see the photos.

Congratulations!! Display those ribbons with pride!

I also make a sugar free asian style of refrigerator pickles. We love them as a side dish or topping.
I'll post the recipe in the other forum.

I can't pick up my ribbons until Sunday when the fair is over.
I will definately post pics then.
I made these pickles I call Fire Candy Pickles. They are only for the brave. It's a sweet pickle (chips) that have garlic and Hot peppers in them. I am bringing a jar to Choptag for those attending. LOL.
Thanks for all the congrats.

I guess you’ll try to tell us there aren’t enough pecans left to make another pie.
