2024 NorthernGardenerCanada
Excited for the new season ahead. Ripening fruit from winter plants and big bouncy seedlings ready to roll.
I thought I’d start a thread for photos from this season. Lots going on, the new garden at home as well as a lot of plants to be grown at the farm hub again. Numerous projects on the go and some exciting news to share this summer! As always, more info and photos on my Instagram and facebook as well @northerngardenercanada Have a wonderful season! KarenO |

Very nice. I love yellow tomatoes. Like the milder flavor. What are the dark red ones?

It’s all about choosing the best varieties for the area I think mine do pretty well. Definately not the place to be growing tomatoes commercially that’s for sure but garden tomatoes do well here and there are lots of really nice market gardens, places, growing in tunnels, etc. I’ll be showing a lot of pictures of outdoor ground tomatoes here on Vancouver Island as the season goes on |

I'm growing some of your tomatoes too: Taiga (has become a must every season), Midnight Sun, Karma Miracle, and Cowboy. Really excited for the last!

Will do! Got the biggest seedlings which included Taiga, Cowboy, and Midnight Sun in the ground yesterday; smaller seedlings including Karma Miracle will sit in pots another week. Let's hope the growing season is decent. I worry about the sea temperatures being so high and hurricanes.

Always excited to see what you come up with Karen. Have Polaris (repeat favorite), Cowboy, and One Trick Pony in the ground and Ruby Slippers in a pot. Also shared 6 other Ruby Slippers with friends & family. I must say all 7 of the RS I started were about the most happy/healthy/sturdy plants of the ~45 I had growing indoors. Looking forward to seeing how they all do through the summer. If you read this Karen, I'm hoping you might tell us more about One Trick Pony. I came across the story behind the name and that it's an RL purple, but that's about it. How would you compare it to Polaris in terms of flavor, productivity, DTM, size, etc.? I guess I'll have those answers in a couple months, but that would require patience

Have been trying and have so far failed to post photos of two Cowboy fruit I picked today before (more) rain arrives. These are the sixth and seventh ripe fruit I've had from three plants, so far. Ripened later than Stump of the World (which, BTW must be the most productive tomato I've ever grown), and about the same as Taiga. Didn't weigh the fruit but you can see the dimensions. Really attractive brownish red with green/copper shoulders, and very meaty flesh. Removed most of the seed to ferment for the future, and cut up the remaining flesh for lunch--delicious!! sweet and rich, and just a little tangy--didn't need salt or any oil or dressing. Cowboy is really a first class tomato!!! Definitely going to be growing this again! Thanks KarenO for breeding this winner, and CrazyAboutOrchids for generously sending me seed this spring.
