favorite blacks
I have decided that for my winter garden, I will concentrate on black varieties as
they seem to be my favorite variety (Cherokee green remains my favorite species). Here are some of my candidates but I have a feeling that I am missing some other good ones. What are your favorites and which would you highly recommend. JD's Spec. C-tex Brad's Black Heart Black Pear Purple cherokee Black from Tula Paul Robeson Black Krim Black giant Black Sea Man Black Prince Blue Ridge Black Black BrandwBine Chocolate Cherokee Black & Brown Boar Ananas Nois Japanese Trifele Blk Black Cherry Purple bumble bee Black Cherokiee Here's a Carolyn Male lesson for tonight. Black Pear was my overall favorite in last summers Canada garden. Here in Alpine, CA., it qualified as a spitter!! Go figure. Back to the topic. If you have any you love, (black tomatoes), please post them. I do have a couple more that I can't think of tonight. So far, JDs goes to the head of the class. |

If I may quote Camochef:
"I spent years growing every black tomato variety I could find and those I grow now are: Dana's Dusky Rose, Bear Creek, Amazon Chocolate. If I was to add a fourth to my preferred list it would be Blackmaster, although its not as productive as the other three favorites. Black Krim too much cracking, Cherokee Purple was too inconsistent, Black from Tula was too sweet for my tastes, Indian Stripe was fantastic the first year I grew it, but went down hill for the next 4-5 years till I finally eliminated it too. Jd's special and Vorlon produced some real monsters, they weren't consistent or tasty enough, tried Carbon and Paul Robeson for a number of years and never found one that I'd brag about." -Camochef |

My favorites are Wessel's Purple Pride and Amazon Chocolate, they are so easy to grow and so reliable that they almost take the challenge out of growing tomatoes.
I am also growing Dana's Dusky Rose & Bear Creek now... I have to keep B54reds's dilute bleach spray ready to fight the botrytis (grey mold) that they seem to get more easily. Last edited by parah; April 5, 2015 at 01:40 AM. |

I like very much Nuits australes, very productive too (5 kg)
Cherokee chocolate was planted beside it and gave only 3-4 fruits Paul Robeson had very good flavor and one of my absolute favorites is Kazachka and not to forget Ananas noire and Black Vernissage, one of the most beautiful tomatoes ever |

Black Plum was a favorit for me last year. It was not too soft, didn't crack, had the wonderful smokey 'Black flavor' .. too bad it was also infested with BER - the curse of paste and elongated tomatoes. If the susceptibility to BER doesn't scare you, by all means try it to have a black with a different, stronger consistency.

Dwarf Tasmanian Chocolate was really good. I also liked Purple Bumble Bee and Black and Brown Boar. Cherokee Purple is of course great too.
Black Brandywine was one of the worst tomatoes I've grown. It had a very musky, gamey sort of flavor. |
