I just saw this in a "cool gadgets" segment on youtube. They said these are in 40,000 homes in Africa. They are going to be selling it here, in July, for "off the grid" living.

It is a biogas digester for food scraps. They say that an average family produces enough food scraps to produce 3 hours of cooking. It also produces liquid fertilizer.

They give you a little counter stove and a lamp that runs on biogas.

I live in a condo, so I can't have one, but I thought others might be interested.

I first read this as Home Biogas Disaster.

That is way cool... too bad for me that it only works in warm climates.
You gotta love the innovative tech that's coming along! Imagine using your food waste to make enough gas for cooking.

Well where I am living, you would need a heated greenhouse to maintain a working temperature 68 F and above for more than 3 months of the year. Also, even unheated greenhouse space is expensive and you want to use it for food production to the max.

Using a heater to run the biogas digester would only make economic and 'green' sense if you have a heat source powered by solar, wind or another 'clean' say carbon-free energy source. Our grid electricity is partly hydro but still some fuel is burned to make up the difference in our needs. So even if you could afford a heated greenhouse space for biogas, burning fuel to heat the digester would defeat the purpose.

Is that 3 hours of cooking produced with a week's worth of scraps, or a month, or what?

Daily. According to the site. You could probably get more than that with food scrap donations from neighbors, friends, and family.

They, also, send a little lamp that runs on biogas.

Years ago in the 70's made up oil crisis there was a guy in the UK that collected manure from his hogs and made natural gas for his car, enough to run it for a week until the next batch was ready.
