Series of Striped Pear Tomatoes

Here are the early results of my breeding efforts to create striped, pear-shaped tomatoes!! So far, 4 very different colors. I've got an orange on the way, as well as a dark-fleshed and green-fleshed striped pear. I'm still refining the shape and flavor, but I've got lots of fixed recessives to work from now.

They are ranging between 1-2 oz. Flavor is all over the board right now, but my goal is to breed more flavor into the pears. The dark green with red striped one is the best tasting so far - but no surprise since it has Berkeley Tie Dye in the gene pool.

I often see flavor be great in one gen, then poor in the next but it comes back in the 3rd. Many is the abandoned project because of that, so don't give a segregate up too soon, if it was there once .

Those are some very cool looking maters right there. What is the production like between them? I remember growing plain ol' Yellow Pear many years ago, and it was just crazy how many tomatoes that thing cranked out.

Nifty! Hope you have mixed some disease resistance in there. Not sure why, but I've had more trouble with yellow pears in my garden than any other variety.

The colors remind me of Jelly Belly jellybeans.

The production was excellent. I even had a few seedlings (not shown in the pics) that had hypertresses and the longest hanging quality I've ever seen in a tomato. Even after the plant had died and turned brown, the tomatoes were still hanging on the vine and of really good quality. Normally yellow and red pears rot easily, but not these.

I hope you know how lucky that is!
I had shape segregations from a pear cross this year, and one of them was pear shaped. A huge number of these pears simply burst as soon as they started to ripen. I even picked a bunch green and there were still at least 30% that split off the vine when color started to develop. My impression from looking at all the shapes in that cross is that the "pear-ness" dimensions are a crapshoot, and in my case the pear shape was really unworkable. Couldn't keep a ripe one in its skin. I was glad I wasn't looking for pear!
