Default Red Beard Bunching Onion

I've seen a variety called red beard available online. Read one site saying how the cooler weather at end of summer autumn gives a better red color. Anyone grown it? Did you find that the end of summer weather better for this variety?

Grew it one year, and it did fine.

It wasn't hardy enough to overwinter, here, which I look for. So, I gave up on it.
