Help with potatoes.
These potatoes were labled as a mid season variety, I think the name of the variety is Banana or Banana Legs or some thing like that. Below is a picture of the bins I'm growing them in, they are only half way filled (about 6 inches). Should I fill these bins up or will I only get potatoes in the original layer of soil?

In my experence i have found the soil in containers gets too warm and dont grow a lot of potatoes. As Eddie said full to the top later on during flowering but also try and keep the the mix from getting too warm.

Ok, so I know it gets scalding HOT here in Texas.
How do I keep mine from getting too hot? They're growing in White compactor bags. ~* Robin

Should probably be pretty close to harvest I'd think. If you are feeling optimistic, you can dig around with your fingers under one of the plants and see if there are any potatoes ready to pick. You'll know how close you are if the skin slips off the potato easily when brushed or rubbed with your finger.
You generally don't harvest until the plant tops start to yellow and die back.

So the tops are starting to slightly die back. I was curious so I dug down slowly into the dirt and felt what I believe was a potato, it was about 1 inch in diameter and about 3-4 inches long. I will be harvesting soon and will definitely take some pictures for posting.
