Default Ground Cherries and saving seeds/germinating seeds

I was at funeral for my wifes aunt and we went out to the deased garden who was know for cooking and one of her specialties was ground cherry pie. Her ground cherries were not quite ripe but I picked two fruit that had a white husk and I have them sitting on the counter and would like to get seeds and germinate them next spring for my mother in-law but was not sure if I would get viable seeds and how to save them/germinate them. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Craig
