These were my favorites/honorable mentions this year.
Black Krim/Noire de Crimmee Brandywine Sudduth F2 red cherry [Lime Green Salad x ?? -either Ping Pong or Gardener's Delight] Rose Tigrella- Early, pretty, tasty, cherry size. Cherokee Green Kelloggs Breakfast Orange Banana Roman Candle Alot of the red beefsteaks were good (Earls' Faux, Stump, Ashleigh, Red Penna, Chapman) but there were enough cultural problems that I didn't get a chance to see most varieties at their best (blight hit before many were ripe etc). |

This year I had only 20 or so varieties survive, but the standouts from those are:
Canestrino No. 1 Ludmilla's Red Plum Marizol Magic Granny Carvielle's Yellow Roma Still getting highs in the low 90's so have a few varieties still ripening that I have yet to taste... Jeanne |

In addition to Black Krim, C. purple, Hungarian Heart, a friend's family heirloom, and Jet Star I will be adding:
Red Penna - although production was low, I will certainly try again. Serdtse Buivola Odesskiy Rozovyi Tony's Italian Indiana Red I didn't have any real stinkers this year, last year the list was long and none returned. May grow Togorific again just for the cute factor - a new set of critieria?? Piegirl |

I have not tried hundreds of Varieties of tomatoes, but I will give you some that are at the top of my list.
Sungold F1 Brandy Wine Sudduth Cherokee Purple Pink Berkely Tie Die Persimmon(mild but delicous) Coustralle, hands down the best red I have ever tasted. Omar's Lebanese, sweet and delicous Purple haze F1 Brandy Boy F1- at times better than Brandy wine Sudduth Dwarf Wild Fred F5-possibly the best tomato I have ever tasty. Wes-I only got a couple off a diseased plant this year-but they were outstanding

Here are some new ones I tried which I'll plant again next year.
Bedouin - a spicy black pear Lillian's Red Kansas - giant pointed red with great flavor Lucky Cross - enormous plants set bushels Early Wonder - actually is early and clear pink Sophie's Choice - sweet red salad tomato Green Doctors - they do split, but best GWR cherry ever Rose Quartz - pink cherry develops good flavor late in season I agree with a lot of the choices folks have mentioned. Every year is different, but with all the varieties out there, I rarely give a poor performing tomato a second chance. |

Glad you specified top 20 rather than top 10, can never narrow my list down that far! Here are those that I'll certainly want to grow again next year. Most of these are perennial favorites.
Reds: Nepal - good all-purpose medium sized red Mayo's Delight - always good flavor here in a northern state Monfavet - grew this last yr for the first time in 15 yrs, good flavored early variety. Gail's Sweet Plum - new var for me in '09, very good flavored 1" plums, available from CV Sand Hill Heidi - our preferred paste var for canning Hungarian Italian - our next best paste variety Yellows: Lemmony (aka Limmony) Hugh's Lillian's Yellow Heirloom - very late here in SW Mich but worth it Sun Gold (F1) Pinks: Aunt Ginny's Purple - always outperforms Brandywine for me and tastes just as good Cherokee Purple Caspian Pink - I hear folks dis this variety but when we have cooler summers like this yr and last yr, it is one of my best performers and tastes very good The Dutchman - pleasant surprise, new to me in '09 Tiffen Mennonite - see comment for Aunt Ginny's Purple, same goes for this Other colors: Aunt Ruby's German Green Black Krim Lucky Cross - consistently better than any other bicolor I've tried (and that has been quite a few) My favorites in pots: Skazka Summertime Green - one of the Dwarf project varieties With all these every year varieties and others I want to regrow to generate fresh seed, it keeps getting harder to find space for the "new experiments"!

My favorites change every year!
2009, Piriform, Fox cherry, Sun Sugar F1, Earl's Faux. 2008, Aunt Ruby's German Green, Cherokee Purple, and Orange Strawberry. (This year they've hardly produced anything, and don't stand out at all. But someone to whom I gave an OS seedling says it's the best-tasting tomato in her garden this year.) 2007, Black Krim (especially cooked!) and Opalka. (This year, Opalka is good but not as large or wonderful as in previous years.) 2006, Ernie's Round, Aunt Ginny's Purple (both had luscious tomatoes but not very many of them), and ARGG were the best large ones, Sun Sugar F1 and Galina the best cherries. 2005, Black Cherry, Tommy Toe, and Opalka. (Black Cherry was really outstanding that year and the year before, but have gotten either mislabeled seedlings or duds ever since. This year, it's kind of sour.) |
