2010 SSE Yearbooks Mailed Yesterday
And so starts the drama of who gets theirs first, who whines the most, who needs to subcontract with a dog team and driver to get theirs, etc.
I happen to find out yesterday when I was interviewed by John at SSE for the April Spring issue. Thank heavens he's sending me a draft of what he writes, b'c, well, my mouth is only somewhat slower than my finger speed when I'm discussing something I really WANT to discuss, and he did give me lots of leeway.

No, it's not, aside from the fact that the online is still not ready to be used b'c many features that should be there are not there ( it's a comlex issue sonce the creation of the online was subcontracted out), so I'm darn glad that everyone is getting the paper Yearbook this year.

Ah well this is one I don't have to worry about as I don't have the bucks laying around for membership. But I have the public catalog and I am happy with that. They did a good job on it.

Ok...I'm jealous!
If it doesn't come tomorrow, I'm probably not going to see it until next week sometime...like Wednesday or whenever the next thaw comes. |

OOOHHH I got mine in Friday's mail.
I've been looking at bits and pieces last nite and Hubby this morning. I found it interesting that Wi has such a high number of listing members. Especially compared to states that have better growing seasons than we do. It kind of surprised me. Carol |

There are about 4,000 tomato varieties listed. And yes, many of us are SSE members and list tomato varieties and others and there are other perks to membership such as other publications throughout the year as well as the Public catalog, from which anyone can order seeds and the public catalog features only about 40 tomato varieties, but as with the Yearbook there are seeds and roots and tubers for anything that you can imagine that are offered in both. Even for those who don't want to become listed SSE members, as opposed to non-listed SSE members, the membership money helps to further the mission of SSE in terms of preservation of OP varieties. I don't think SSE is for everyone. Speaking personally I think folks should grow some of the more popular varieties first from a commercial source, b/c the Yearbook shouldn't be looked at as a seed company since folks who request varieties should strive to relist those, and after getting experience in just growing tomatoes and being able to know when you have an off type or wrong variety, then consider some of the less available varieties in the YEarbook. It's pretty much amateurs who are listing tomato varieties so there have been times when cross pollinated seed has been sent out. In my SSE blurb I say that seed for most but not all of my varieties came from bagged seed and I said the same thing in my recent seed offer here where I was listing many of the varieties that I do list in the Yearbook, although here I asked only for an SASE for a few seeds of up to 5 varieties. What I'm saying is that you need to be able to confirm a variety is correct and when not, then pull it out. And actually many of the rarer varieties are now listed by some of the newer seed sites online as well as new rarer ones listed by seed companies that have been in business for a while, however nothing beats reading the Yearbook entries for many of us. I haven't received my Yearbook yet but from some that have I understand the suggested seed price was raised one dollar for each of the categories of seed. Last time that was done the listed members voted on that with three options offered, but this time I don't think any of us knew until folks started getting their 2010 Yearbooks. So new SSE members might not realize that the suggested 2009 request prices increased for the 2010 Yearbook. If you want to know more about SSE and also to view the Public catalog you can go to: http://seedsavers.org/ Hope that helps.
