Has anybody ever heard of "Potato Leaf Climber"?

Hi all,
I was talking with my dad the other day about a tomato that my grandfather used to grow. He called it "Potato Leaf Climber". Has anyone heard of this? My grandfather was from southeast Michigan where he spent the majority of his days in the garden with cheap wine and Pall Malls. My recollection of the tomato is a large (1-2 lb.) pink, potato leafed variety. It would be great to find something similar for us to grow, while drinking better wine, sans the pall malls! I've got some Brandywine (sudduth) seedlings started, but i'd love some suggestions.

The name of it is usually known Trip-L-Crop and the vines are not really climbing, it's just an older way of saying it's indeterminate, and yes the fruits are large pink ones, and yes the leaves should be potato leaved.

Burgess Seed Co introduced this variety many years ago and yes, it is also known as Climbing Trip-L Crop, but don't believe all you read in the above link. It's a typical indeterminate as far as vine length goes.

The vines don't soar to 25 ft and well, a lot of that description is hype. After all, they're selling something.

Tomoto Growers Supply has Climbing Trip-L Crop listed but leaf shape is not indicated so my guess is the version they are selling would be regular leaf??

Craig, I mentioned Sandhill only b'c I was reminding myself about this variety by looking in the SSE YEarbook where Glenn at Sandhill lists it and does say it's PL, as it should be. I'm sure there are other sources.

I wasn't terribly enthused with the leaves shown in that link either.

I'll also say that it should be pink as Glenn lists it, I don't know how Linda at TGS lists it, but as I recall that Burgess site said it was red. Short term memory problem here.

Thanks, I'll check em out. I definitely remember them being a potato leaf plant. I also saw another called "Italian Tree" that kind of fits the bill.

The tree part of the name is also misleading b/c there's nothing tree like about it. it's just a normal indeterminate with long vines as most of them do have as opposed to determinate varieties.

I would think that if the memory is one with climbing in the variety name that the Trip-LCrop one would be the one being remembered.

There's a variety called Giant Tree as well, which I've grown and it's just a normal indet.

The names that are given to some varieties can really mislead folks as I see it.

So I know this is an old thread, but I picked up a pack of Trip L Crop to try out this year. Plants came up showing regular leaves. I got the seed from TFest., and from what I read it can be a questionable source. The plant I'm looking for is def. potato leaf. Guess we'll see what happens.

I have a pkg of Trip L Crop seeds of unknown origin. People who know I love tomatoes give me seeds all the time. The ziploc bag they are in says only Trip L Crop Tomato, and has an insert with a picture of a large pink tomato on it. The leaves in the picture on the insert are potato leaf.. I will not be growing these seeds and you are welcome to them if you want them. No guarantees or other warranty given by me. Only the seeds.

I saw seeds at a local Farm store for 59 cents!!! I had to buy a couple packs... maybe I'll grow it... next year, lol!!!
