Yellow Pear-Variegated Foliage??

I have grown yellow pear in the past and don't recall it having variegated foliage. I have approx. 8-10 plants (No! No! They are not all for me!) and all but one has variegated foliage. Is this unusual?

More than unusual - extremely rare! wonder of the source plant for the seeds was in the neighborhood of Variegated??

I just checked my source for these seeds - Victory Seeds. Maybe I will keep most of these plants after all (I'm just beginning to harden off/plant out - last weekend we had cold, rain and frost!, and yesterday and today, it is 90F in the shade, 75F at night!) - and see what develops...

I did sent Victory Variegata, and Mike did grow it, and is offering seeds this year. The key question - could it be a mix up, since I wouldn't expect the variegated trait to show up in the F1. You will find out when the fruit set, as the shape of the developing fruit will be very telling.

I did want to try the variegata this year, but didn't get the see in time. What is the fruit like?

This is VERY interesting, indeed! I'm growing Yellow Pear for the first time this year, Burpee's seed, I think, and it has RL, but today I was at Lowe's, as usual I had to browse the tomato plants, and there was a flat of "Yellow Pear" with extremely variegated foliage. I said to my friend, "That's not Yellow Pear. I wonder what that is?" Was it mislabeled? I think it was one of the Bonnie Farms plants. I almost wish I had gotten one to grow out, just to see what it would do.

I have a friend who tells me that Round up when sprayed on a plant as a very fine mist causes a varigated look. I told him that would explain the varigated look showing up all of a sudden if you used Round up in your garden somewhere on a windy day. He said that it carries over to the next generation! He is an Iris hybridizer and accidently got Round up on a few plants. They got white splotches on the leaves and some of the petals as well. The next season they grew out the same way! Kinda scary.

Interesting, Dunkel - I hadn't heard that before.

I don't use Roundup. However, if it carries on to the next generation, then perhaps it could have been used by my seed source. I have no idea what farming methods they use, or if they are organic....

I had a Yellow Pear last year with variegated stem and foliage. It was much less pronounced as the season went on. I saved (unbagged) seeds. And I have pictures somewhere, so I will go look for how to post them on this forum.

It was supposed to be a Jaune Flammee that I got from a local nursery, but the fruit was definitely yellow & pear-shaped.
