Variations in Purple haze????

My Purple Haze is loaded with fruit and doesn't seem to be bothered by the unknown disease crud that I've been dealing with. My fruits seem to be larger than what I've seen others growing. They almost look like a smaller beefsteak version of Indian Stripe.
I'm not complaining by any means, but has anyone else noticed differences in P.H. from one year to the next?

Yes, especially in the F2, F3s where they can segregate and recombine in just about any size from cherry to 12 or 14 oz beefseak.

Purple Haze has three parental inputs - Black Cherry, Brandywine, and Cherokee Purple. Unless your plants are F1, I would expect to see quite a bit of variation in size, taste, and even color.

I've grown the F1, and I've also grown plants from my saved seed (F2 to F4), as well as F2 and F3 saved seed from others. I've yet to grow a plant where the fruit is substantially identical in all respects to Purple Haze F1.

I do have one in the garden this year that looks promising, though - but I won't know for sure until I actually taste the fruit and compare it closely with the F1.

I have a Purple Haze F4 (F3 seeds from Ray) growing that I saved seeds from last year. Last years plant was described to a T by Bubba. My current plant was a real late start that was actually part of a germination test and I let this on grow. It is in a bad spot sun wise and the soil has never been amended. I am getting small beefsteak shaped tomatoes in the 3-4 oz range. Pulled my first two a couple days ago and have yet to taste it. Last years plant was a monster healthy plant and gave me fruit anywhere from 2 to 7oz with most being in the 3-4 oz range. Current plant is real healthy and is still setting fruit. Last years plant was easily the healthiest in my garden.

I grew out Raybo's F3 last year and am growing the F4 this year along with a F4 from Papa Vic that is supposed to be larger. We shall see. Ami

I just checked the tag that Ray included with seeds. Mine is F4 also. They look great so far.

I grew an F2 last year that grew pretty true to form. Have no idea how my F3s will do this year, but I figured I'd give it a try.

I got some F4 seeds from Ray also. I sprouted 3 seeds, two PL and one was RL. I'm growing one of each.

My Purple Haze F4 plant developed into a PL and an RL from two seeds I started in a Rapid Rooter plug in January. The two plants are in the cage on the right. About 55 inches tall as of today. Thought I would let both develop to compare fruit consistency, production and taste over the Season.

Druzba is in the cage on the left.



All of the plants are starting to taking off now that we are hitting temps in the mid-80s.

Ray I'm way behind you as far as progress with Purple Haze. As you know I got my seeds from you much later. I cant wait to try them though. On a side note, how big are the fruit on Goose Creek supposed to get? I thought they were a saladette type tomato. Reason I'm asking is because I've got fruit on one GC and the fruit looks as if its going to be in the 4-6 oz range. Is this right?

Hey Damon,

The seed I gave out came from a relatively large Goose Creek I saved from last Season. If this trait continues into the saved seed, you should get tomatoes 2.5 inches in diameter, in the 4 to 6 ounce range.
