transplanting beets

i have only about 15 or 20 plants that germinated out of about 100 seeds planted! they are 2" tall. the bed is a mess, totally covered with pursalane that sprouted and have grown. since i have so few beet plants it is not worth weeding so i want to turn over the entire bed and transplant those few beets that are 2" tall.

are they too big to transplant?

Do it. I start my beets in the greenhouse, then transplant outside, they always 'take' and get very large over the summer.

I have transplanted beets before. It may or may not slow down their growth a bit, but they do fine.

When tearing up the bed, remember that purslane is an edible weed and might make a nice salad component.

thanks. i know purslane is edible and i have it in spades yet i never tried to taste it, i hear it has a lemon flavor.

you'd think i seeded purslane in that bed! i must have 300 plants in a 5' X 6' bed, it's a green carpet! they all popped at the same time, typically it appears here and there but apparently the hot soil really kicks germination into high gear, well not the beet seed! i only watered the rows where i planted the beet seed to avoid this mass emergence of weeds! i am amazed how much grew in HOT dry soil that i never watered 1 time.
