Default volunteers/cross pollination

I was just reading an article in a national magazine and the author stated
Quote:
volunteers grow on their own schedule and are less likely to cross pollinate with other plants
I understand the idea of volunteers coming up when the moisture and temperature are ideal but I never heard anything about being less likely to cross pollinate.

Looking for comments...

Only thing I can come up with is that the author thought volunteers flowered at a different time then the other plants of the same type so when the volunteers were flowing none of the plants of the same type would be.

If the author was talking about tomatoes then I am not sure how that could be as indet. flower from spring to fall.
