Best medium sized red tomato
I grow tomatoes for my Dad and he likes them to be about medium sized.
So far he likes Early Girl and Souix....but they seem to have good years and bad. I'm always on the lookout for new varieties to try. So I'm just looking for suggestions...what is your favorite medium sized red tomato? Thanks Jim |

Eva Purple Ball
would be my recommendation. I grew it last year for the first time. The vines had lots of tomatoes all summer and into the fall. They were very delicious and quickly became a favorite. I will plant enough to can this year. If you grow it for your dad I hope he will like it too.

Break O'Day is excellent and productive. Similar in taste to Sioux, and seems to do well, even when other varieties do not.
Brandywine Red, as mentioned by Ted is also very good. |

Best flavored medium red for me - no contest - Nepal. First grew it when Johnny's listed it in the late 1980s, and it has been a consistent star in my garden ever since.

I wondered how long it would take for someone to notice......:-) In my defense, they do look somewhat 'reddish' from afar? Pinkish-red? Okay, guess not.

Moskvich is nice, and among the early mid-season.

My latest favorite for red tomato is Tarasenko6, although it's larger than medium -sized...it's also large in taste.
My favorite medium-sized tomatoes aren't red, they're black or purple depending on your eye. They are Bear Creek and Dana's Dusky Rose, both superb tasting tomatoes. I rated Bear Creek as my best tasting tomato of the year this past season and Dana's Dusky Rose was right on its heels. Ted mentioned Liz Birt, which I agree is a fantastic tomato, but not medium-sized and more pink than purple. Still another that I would recommend highly. If you guys like hearts, I thought Wes was a very tasty red heart-shaped tomato, but like most hearts, production is considerably less than my favorite slicers. Gigantesque and Preacher Joe were two reds I've grown for a couple years now that perform fairly well and taste good too. Of course, I'm a Brandywine lover which are pink and somewhat larger as far as my favorites go. (Brandywine-Glicks, Brandywine-Sudduths, Cowlick's Brandywine both the original P.L. and the R.L. varieties). Red Brandywines, as mentioned by a few others has also been among my favorites over the years. Hoping the best for you this season with whatever you choose. Camo |

I was also going to say Moskvick, Rutgers but why stop there when there are so many to chose from. Honestly, I'd try a black for sure. Black Prince is somewhat early and super tasty. Or the Black Krim I here is good. New for me this year. Too many tomatoes too little time/space!
If your Dad thinks EG is tasty I think he'll be pleasantly surprized this year with all of these recommendations. I wish my Grandpa was still around. I used to set him up with a few plants for a mini garden and he did well with it until his mid 90's anyway. Thanks for the memory, and the tears! Best of luck. |

Druzba has terrific flavor; but as for production Big Beef is hard to beat. Grow a couple every year for insurance and the taste is very good for a hybrid. It is nice to have a little certainty in tomato growing.
